Our county is more enlightened ;-) when it comes to recycling. The local dump does have separate section for longlife bulbs as well as fluorescent tubes.

We have a 3-bulb central fitting which we use with large candle bulbs. They were always difficult to find and the new long-life!!! ones are useless, so when my local shop said they weren't being made any more, I bought up the rest of her stock! :-) :-) Not quite as bad as it sounds - she only had about a dozen left.

I am learning from experience which make lights up quickly and which doesn't.

We are all told not to put them in the rubbish, so my local shopkeeper asked what we should do with them. Reply from Council "Take them to the local tip, where they have special facilities". Further enquiries at local tip "No we haven't. We just put them in the skip with everything else!" :-S :-S :-S

I bought some not too long ago in B&M, but i have seen them recently in those shops that sell mousetraps, screws , and all kinds of wotsits.

I've got a supply of the old bulbs , bought them about 5 years ago from COOPERS, the little booklet you quite often find in papers ect, not sure if they still do them . iris :-)

We bought some "energy efficient" light globes. A pack of three.

The first one we put in lasted ONE DAY! The 2nd two lasted less than a week.

I contacted the manufacturer, they said they were aware of the problem, and were trying to fix it. Not good enough... they shouldn't have been in the shops.

They sent me a replacement 3 pack and an extra one. They didn't last either. I let them know, and told them I wouldn't be buying their light globes again. I didn't hear from them again, funny about that.

I really dislike the ones that take ages to fully light......... especially in rooms I don't use often, by the time the light is on I've found what I want and am ready to switch the light off!

Sat in depressing lighting... :-(

Like all fluorescents, they don't like being turned off and on and off
if you are in and out of a room,
far better for the bulb to leave it on

they are rubbish - better off with a candle

I have a nice supply of "proper" bulbs :-D

Excluding the wireing, he meant the light fitting. The connection from the fitting to the bulb might not have been firm.

There are different styles of energy saving bulbs. We've one on the upstairs landing which takes yonks to come on fully, but a different style in the loo is instant. We aren't bothered about the landing one. It gives us enough light to climb the stairs.

I loathe the ones in our living room - 2 pendent fittings with 5 bulbs in each. They take a while to come on and, as far as I'm concerned, not bright enough to comfortably read at night. When they eventually wear out, I'm hoping we can get a different type!

I can't see how these new bulbs can be classed as eco-friendly. They have to make so many more because they don't last as long, then you have to make special trips to get rid of them even without all the new set up costs to make the new fangled things.

It can't possibly be eco-friendly!! Just a money making exercise for someone.

Our house was re wired in 2008.
The eco friendly bulbs regularly give up the ghost in very few weeks (& they cost an arm & a leg)

Hi Det,
No noise, just blew - all 3. as I said, over a month.
It COULD be the ancient wiring. My bathroom light (a right pain to change the bulb, flat to the ceiling), went through a phase of 'blowing' regularly, but seems okay now.

Kath, I've had to put an 'old fashioned' light bulb on my landing. My loo is downstairs, and the 'eco-friendly' bulb took so long to reach a decent brightness that I had a choice - risk the stairs in half light or pee on the landing :-|

I think all "low energy" bulbs are rubbish. They are supposed to last much longer than the old style bulbs but I remember in my late mother's house she had a bulb in the landing light which had been in there since she moved in in 1957 (it had probably been there before that time) and it was still going when she died in 2003. Just as well because I couldn't reach the light even on steps. The same bulb went back in even after she had the house re-wired somewhere in the 80's.

That shouldn't have happened :-S

OH suggests it might be something to do with the fitting rather than the bulbs. Either the springs are a little loose, or the power was arking. If that was the case, you'd have noticed the bulbs flickering or making a sssss or shshsh sound.

It's a pity you'd have got rid of the receipt for the bulbs by now. You could have taken them back and had them replaced or refunded.

'Long lasting', 'eco-friendly', that's (allegedly) why they cost so much light bulbs?
The ones the government encourage us to use.
The ones you aren't meant to put in your general waste, but are meant to take to the recycling centre - thereby using extra fuel (if you have a car) because they contain mercury - but we aren't allowed to buy mercury thermometers, because they're dangerous?

Well - they're rubbish!! :-| :-| :-|

I bought a new light fitting less than 3 months ago, a central thing, with 3 bulbs.
The third bulb has just blown
:-|

All 3 bulbs have blown within a month. :-P :-P :-P

My old light fitting - also with 3 bulbs, took the old fashioned small bayonet candle fittings, which would last at least a year. :-(
