A number of British spiders DO bite - and it can be quite painful.
The false widow spider can give a nasty bite and other species (although relatively rare) can also leave their mark which will swell and feel quite sore.

Not only do some spiders bite, most other carnivorous insects CAN bite - but rarely do.

I've (knowingly) been bitten by a ladybird, which wasn't too bad, 'nipped'/bitten by an earwig, bitten in the ear by some bug or other.
A wood ant that objected to where I was sitting (not a wood ant nest) bit me. That was a strange sensation. It was a very sunny day, and I suddenly felt bad sunburn on my leg. I commented on how hot the sun was, then realised, I had hefty boots and jeans on - the sun couldn't penetrate that!
I rolled up my trouser leg, to see the ant scurry out, and a red mark on my leg :-(

But never been bitten by a spider.
