My mother's recipe ~

1 cup AllBran 1 cup sultanas 1 cup soft brown sugar 1 cup milk

Mix together and leave overnight.

Add 1 cup SR flour. Mixture into loaf tin & cook about 1 hour 400F/200C

Mum would often use 1 cup hot tea instead of milk.

If I remember correctly, she would put some foil over the loaf for the first 45 minutes, to stop it getting burned on top.

I wish that I could help you on that one, Stella. Even my mother-in-laws ordinary tealoaf says to cook for 1 1/2 hrs in a moderate oven.

I do cook it for about that length of time. At a guess it would start out at about 180 fan then lower it when it has a good crust. It needs to start out fairly high to get a little rise. You do need to really get the middle cooked well.

Maybe somebody will have a better idea??

Def healthy with almost no fat and no added sugar.

Does anyone have an idea of the oven settings and how long to cook in an ordinary oven please?

It's not cheap!

There are macadamia farms near here. When I go to the local farmers' markets I look for it, and there's one small supermarket in the next town that sells it (our local one doesn't).

It's wonderful in a salad dressing. :-)

I have that AllBran loaf recipe. My mother made in when we lived in Scotland! We left Scotland to come to Australia in 1963, no idea how long mum had been making it.

I like it, as does my brother, my DH calls it the brick.

I might try it again, using oat bran & a banana.... and I'll use macadamia oil.

In my healthy eating quest have been thinking of something healthy to enjoy, and have come up with something which feels even indulgent to the palate when avoiding goodies which higher cholesterol.

Yes, a new take on the old All-Bran Tea Bread (hold your hat!). Every loaf is different, it just depends on what dried fruit is open at the time. Plenty of scope for experiment and may be enjoyed almost freely (if you would want to)!

The healthy bit is 4 oz oat bran mixed with 4oz SR flour and a few tsps baking powder to vaguely give a bit of lift.

Soak your dried fruit in a freshly made cup of tea but only leave 10 - 15 mins, the idea being the bit of heat helps the rise?

Mix flours, dried fruit and tea, baking power, 1 egg, 1 mashed banana (for sweetness, this mix contains no added sugar), 1 dessertspoon rapeseed oil.

If you enjoy a citrus flavour a bit of added zest may be used. Nuts would be a healthy addition, too. Beat mix well and cook in a small loaf tin. I did enjoy the banana flavour without the addition of the zest, or mixed dried fruit with peel giving an occasional citrus bite! Plain old sultanas works well, too.

Since I cooked in the Aga, difficult to say about times. Needs cooking well, much like a tea loaf recipe. I start high then lower for ages in the bottom, cooler oven (mostly cos I forget it's there).

Of course, it will look like a brick and probably weigh almost as much, but I can honestly say am really enjoying having something which resembles Cake! I don't spread butter on, but sit and nibble slices when the urge takes me. Have been eating a couple of these loaves every week and see a loss on the scales weekly, too.

I read that oat bran has twice the benefits of oatmeal (for porridge lovers trying to lower cholesterol).
