Tenerife Sun Report 8 Jan 2015 13:03

I looked at my bank statement today and found that £79.00 had been paid to Amazon Prime. I ordered a DVD box set from Amazon in December for a present for my grand daughter and thought that as a result of this my account had been hacked.

I rang the banks fraud department and they explained to me that somewhere, whilst placing my order I had agreed to join Prime. The bank has had hundreds of calls re this and gave me a number for Amazon. I rang them and they have done the transaction to cancel the Prime account and put the money back into my bank. It's £79.00 per year.

Just thought I would put this post up in case anyone else thought Prime was free as I did. There was no obvious mention of payment at the time I joined.

If anyone has joined Prime by mistake or believing it to be free the number to call Amazon is 0800 4962454. The person I spoke to was very helpful.

Oh, my goodness!

Do you have to click to subscribe, or is it one of those 'if you don't tick this box you're automatically subscribed' cons?

Tenerife Sun Report 8 Jan 2015 13:58

It must be for less than three months as I did it on December 3rd and was charged on January 4th so II think it is for a month. But the cost and terms are hidden away somewhere and aren't odvious.

Amazon free trial is for a month, it's best to cancel auto renewal as soon as you have signed up (you still get a month free). If you buy a lot of Christmas gifts the postage saving is amazing.

Last year they offered a deal of £49 for a year which we took up as hubby watches boxed sets.

£79 is too much if you have Sky or another multi-station provider so we have cancelled.

Like all online offers you have to be on your toes :-(

I did what Supercrutch suggests.
I joined at the beginning of December and cancelled immediately but I still got my postage free

I accidentally ticked the prime box when I was doing one purchase and couldn't back track on it . I went into my Amazon account and deleted the continuous box .
The free trial ended end dec so better double check it hadn't reinstated it :-(

Nope seems to be ok it's not showing me as being a prime member but will double check when my CC statement comes in

Thanks for the reminder :-D

If you don't care for Sky Murdoch and all their expensive works very much then Amazon Prime is good value. Especially it has Ripper Street which I like though it is not everybody's cup of cocoa.

When buying stuff through Amazon the prime option is clearly marked and in any case you have time to cancel out. I gave it a try and kept it. And free deliveries.

supercrutch Report 8 Jan 2015 23:18

Yep, hubby watch the final episode of Ripper Street the day our sub ended..lolol

We have full Sky multiroom because of the time I have to spend in bed that's more than enough to pay out.

I had this a year ago when I must have clicked on the prime and forgot about it.... Rang them up and they credited my account back straight away... I ordered a phone and wanted it the next day otherwise I wouldn't have bothered

Most things I order are pretty quick arriving and more often than not no postage anyway

You could share Prime between three family members and so cut the cost by a third.

I have recently been ordering more things from Ebay because they are the same price or lower and i don't have to pay postage if they cost under £10 on most things.

I didn't like the Prime Time delivery system, they use their own vans and you could be waiting in all day for a delivery. At least i know what time the Royal Mail van will come and if i am not in i know i can pick item up from PO the next day at my convenience.

I do not like having things left wih neighbours whom i do not trust.

I don't usually post messages on this board but often read the discussions. Today I would like to say how grateful I am to Tenerife Sun for alerting me to the Amazon Prime charge and for giving the phone number to contact. I had no idea that I had been charged after the free trial was up and have now managed to get a full refund. Many thanks!

Thankyou so much, I too inadvertently joined. Am now getting 72.oo+ back.

This is just so bad. You think you are leaving their Amazon Prime page only to find you have joined!!

I was ordering on the Ipad when I accidently ticked the prime box because the page jumped . Its a pity it doesn't let you untick to cancel it .

I did immediately go into my Amazon account when the email came through thanking me for becoming a prime customer . I was able to cancel it although got the 30day free trial

If I was ordering every week then it might be useful but apart from Xmas pressie buying my ordering is spasmodic so not worth it

I'm glad my info was of help to you Adeline and DazedConfused. I thought my bank account had been hacked and that was an awful feeling. Finding out I had inadvertently joined Amazon Prime was a massive relief and getting my money back was the icing on the cake.

The fact that the bank fraud department said they have loads a calls every day reference this matter confirms to me that the initial sign up to join Amazon Prime isn't very clear.
