never use them - if we all use them then there will be no jobs for check-out assistants meaning more unemployment

If I go into a shop to spend my hard earned cash, I want a flesh and blood human being to take it with a smile on their face. I don't want to be served by a machine.

Using these self service tills is like being on a production line. I'm not the product though. I'm the customer. If you want my money, you've got to earn it. :-P

in super markets,
do you HAVE to use a trolley, or basket?

its sort of taken for granted that you do.....

but I've never seen a notice that you MUST

Unexpected item in bagging area!
It's MY shopping bag that you asked tme to place there

Or

Please place item in bag! Please place item in bag!
I can't help it if a pack of chewing gum doesn't weigh enough to register

Check-out operatives regularly thank me for waiting.

Well, I would wait my turn, wouldn't I, especially with that hefty chap standing by the doorway keeping an eye on the comings & goings.

Can't be doing with self service checkouts. I do a big shop once a week and although there only two of us I seem to have trolley full every time .

Can't see where to cut down either unless it's buying less wine ! Lol that's not an option though as we do like a glass or two

Buy 4 plus every week depending on the offers ,not more than 6 tho I hasten to add

....... and a biscotti? :-D

Our local club knows us........ should we be worried?

We often get to the bar to find our beer waiting for us! A schooner of Gold for DH and a midi of VB for me :-D

It's nice..... but a bit of a worry :-D

I get the same!!

but it's when the girls in the coffee shop start making your medium soy latte before you've even opened the door that makes me think "too predictable" ..................................

They know what we buy. The local supermarket is part of a "loyalty" program, which we joined many years ago. I save up the points & get "dollar points" to spend. They send regular emails, letting us know when double/triple points are going on, and what's on special. Recently these emails have change a bit....... the last two have listed "specials"... and they are all items we regularly buy!

Big Brother Supermarkets?

I regularly use the 'self service' aisle.
Fortunately they know me, so when the need to prove I'm over 18 arises, they're ready.

Was taken aback just before Christmas, though, when, with a couple of bottles of wine needing verifying, the girl comes across and says:
'You may as well get another 4. There's a discount on 6, and you get that many in a week anyway' :-D

FOILED!!!!!!!

Do you use the self service aisle?

I've tried it a few times, and have always had a problem with one thing or another not scanning. A staff member has to help to fix the machine, or enter a code. How do they know someone isn't cheating.... paying for cheaper fruit/veg and having something more expensive in the bag?

I like the human contact of a checkout operator (in a small town we know most of the staff).

Our local supermarket started out with eight self-serve checkouts, I noticed yesterday they are putting more in! Which means they will probably need less staff :-(
