We get two or three a day at the moment and usually don't answer but let it go to answer phone. They don't leave a message unless they want to sell us a boiler when it takes the recorded message. However just recently we have had two calls from the computer 'experts' before 8am. Now we are often still in bed at that time and, because it is a strange time we tend to take them because it could be family trying to contact us. OH was not best pleased the other morning and pointed out the time. The reply was, yes we need to catch you before you have a problem with your computer.

Not the same as cold calling but we used to get holiday brochures from a very expensive tour/cruise company ( not requested) which was always had the right name, street and place BUT Always had the 'other' county.

We'd now never go with them on a tour, even if we could afford it, because we would be worried that they would take us to the wrong place.

:-P

I had a good one last night - wished I'd played along.

A mori poll about my house was just about to make a comment when I was told it was on behalf of the local council.

That's the one on the other side of the large river - not mine. It's because of the area - no it's not, because the post code and telephone code originate on my side of the river - it is just that a small area over the other side use the same one.

I have a new way of dealing with them.

After answering the 'phone with "hello"...... I say nothing.

It takes them a while to catch on

When I lived in England and we had people selling double glazing, soffits etc. or wanting to do something to our house I'd just stop them and say they really ought to speak to the house owner and pretend we rented it, they soon went away.

One firm kept phoning to say I'd won a week in Malta. I couldn't get rid of them, we guessed it was time share. I realised one day what I should say so when they phoned again I said - I'm so sorry we can't take it up as my husband only has 5 weeks holiday per year and we already have 6 weeks time share so can't fit in any more holidays, give it to someone else. Never heard from them again. :-D

Both of these gadgets work. I bought the more expensive one on eBay for about half new price.

Cynthia Report 15 Jan 2015 17:09

Earlier in the week when I received one of these cold calls, I had great fun with the person on the other end......

"Well, hello, how are you? So nice of you to call me. Did you have a good Christmas and new year.....dreadful weather we are having isn't it?" That sort of thing.

Each time the chap spoke, I butted in with a question or comment until, at last, when I said that I hadn't asked to speak to him, he simply said....."Ah" and put the phone down.

I am now rehearsing a new spiel....possibly on the subject of having a new loo installed and all that is involved in it .. :-D :-D

'I had a car crash in the last 2 years' - so said one cold caller. 'That's news to me', said I to her - 'Can you jog my memory with the details please?'

The caller then lost the power of speech. An unusual happening for a female!

TPS only work on UK calls, not those made outside the UK

Which is why many UK based companies outsource these calls

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 15 Jan 2015 06:40

We had problems with an ex boyfriend of our grandaughters when she was living with us making silent calls so the phone won't accept nos witheld calls .

A caller gets a message telling them that .

We are ex directory and on the telephone preference but occasionally we get the odd survey call but if I don't recognise the nos I ignore the call

Was told by the telephone preference when I reported one persistent caller yonks ago that the caller wasn't in the UK but was rerouting their call somehow for it to look like a UK nos They had a lot of complaints and they took steps to get the nos closed down .

I hate it when you are ordering something online that the form insists on a tel nos as once you have given it you can get sales calls

If possible I fill in the space with a lots of noughts equivalent to the length of my phone nos

I also have my parents Rose. If I am in, I listen to the answering machine or replay when I get in. Told mum to say pick up if you are in. Mum has my mobile and I cut her off if she rings and ring her back xx

Florence61 Report 14 Jan 2015 22:42

I was told by BT a long time ago that the "telephone preference"service only prevents companies ringing you to sell something. So if they are doing a survey or offering you advice regardless of what this is, they are not breaking the conditions of the TPS and therefore you cannot stop them from ringing unless you go ex directory.

yes it's very annoying when they tell you there is a problem with your comp and you know there isn't. What i do is start speaking in our local language.."Gaelic" they soon hang up or blow a whistle!

Sometimes i say..sorry dont know a mrs******* you have the wrong number and they get really cross, I start laughing and hang up.

You need a sense of humour to overcome the annoyance and then it doesnt bother me so much.
