exactly - pomposity is a dreadful trait :-D

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 23 Jan 2015 08:32

And what exactly does any of this have to do with the thread topic?

I tthink some people are just trying to stir.

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 23 Jan 2015 09:17

are we talking pomposity or grammar here? threads very often go off topic, as does every day conversation - it's what happens

I was accused of saying something intelligent yesterday and all around began to wonder if there might be some hope for me after all.

Damn if I can remember now what I uttered.

For Dermot very funny :-D
For inhabitants of Caerdydd and others.

It is a pretty poor show to pepper somebody else's thread with a large number of trite and irrelevant observations. If you wish to take a dig at somebody than by all means start another thread and do so.

Otherwise try and add something which is relevant to the discussion so far as you can follow it.

I have an old b&w Kindle which is at its most useful when holding tech manuals so that I don't have to cart them around with me. It is also handy when travelling especially given the attitude of RyanAir and others to check in weight. OTOH I would never use it as my reading device as choice. It is wildly unlikely that Errol cannot spring for one of these gadgets.

Last quarter's sales figures showed a sharp decline in the sales of ePads of all kinds together with a sharp rise in the sales of printed books both hardback and paper. Taken with the revival of quality vinyl recordings there may be a change in the wind.

have a nice day

ps: one of Rollo's rellies is married to one of the top honchos in Welsh rugby so I wish them luck on 6 Feb especially as he has wangled me a ticket. So given my seat location I shall dig out a the crib sheet to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

Allez les bleus!

well it was the poster himself who brought Kindles into the mix :-)

You are fortunate to have that choice Rollo.

Others like me do not, thank goodness for the kindle.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 23 Jan 2015 12:09

Let's hope then that Errol does not put anything from the House of Apple into the mix. They can be serious and always push to the front in Starbucks before displaying their iPad for a long pseudo cardigan conversation with the barrista. Everyone else waits and fumes.

As a young man I had a serious fracture of my left arm playing rugby. As a left handed person this was a tad inconvenient. Not being one to allow the minor inconvenience of an arm in plaster to put a brake on things I carried on with life including cycling. Inevitably I suppose this ended up with a crash into a tree and the spare arm broken too.

As I was studying for A levels I was a bit stuck. There being no such thing as a Kindle a friend ( teacher ) rigged me up with a device allowing me to turn the page with my toes. Absolute hoot in the classroom and no prep to do!!! All in all a gain as I ended up with a very good memory as I could not write or make notes.

I got my right arm back in action soon enough to scrawl some stuff into the exam papers.

There are of course many worse hassles having two broken arms than writing and reading. Don't ask just use yr imagination. Children are unkind so I developed a thick skin too

My apologies for digressing to the topic of cardis.
I really do appreciate the seriousness of the topic, just trying to add a little levity, before war breaks out. :-)

I am not well up on the technicalities of the internet, except to know that the more experienced teenager can easily circumvent any barriers to finding what they want to find. As to the opening question, parents should of course take responsibility for what they let their children have access to, not necessarily only by installing controls, but by talking and teaching their child that everything that is found on the internet has to be filtered by the most important censor of all.

Just as another digression, kindle readers or indeed book readers, are much less annoying in queues than those with a seemingly irresistible desire to tell the world and his wife about their various exploits whilst having a phone glued to their ear and not even stopping the conversation to say 'thankyou' to staff when they get to the counter.

Re Starbucks, they have just opened one in the town centre, I am told the coffee is good, but £3 ?! :-0

Linked to internet safety, but not particularly relevant to internet censorship. Interesting all the same.

There's an experiment doing the rounds on facebook at the moment

https://www.facebook.com/laura.candlin

'laura' added a photo on 18 Jan this year with the caption
"Let's see how many shares and likes we can get this to before I go to guides on Wednesday!"

She is holding a piece of paper on which is written
"I'm teaching my guides about e-safety. Please share to show them how far a photo will go (even if you don't want it to)"

As of today, there are 41,460 shares.

That is an excellent way to highlight the dangers of sites such as faceache.

Rambling Rose - the coffee is good but don't forget to don your cardigan or they may not let you in.

Rollo - cheers

Not the dead members - as far as I can tell.

Cardi or not Errol I won't be paying £3 for a coffee lol. Not to be drinking it in the town centre anyway ...maybe somewhere beautiful and interesting, then I might 'just' be able to swallow the price along with the coffee.
