Very true indeed, Dermot.

AnnCardiff I have absolutely no intention of altering, indeed dumbing down my post just because a person chooses to misread it. That is censorship!

Methinks that just maybe a "select few" have an issue not with grammar, English or meaning but more with the poster.

The term "pseudo-intellectual" was used to describe a certain type of person who can often be found in coffee bars and happens to be toting a Kindle whilst holding court. If I had said iPhone 6-toting pseudo-intellectual would all iPhone 6 owners feel affronted?

Consider this...

Yesterday I saw an Escort-driving boy racer.

Which of the following is true?

a. Escorts are bad cars.
b. All boy racers drive Escorts.
c. If you drive an Escort you are also a boy racer.
d. None of the above - it does of course, as anyone with an ounce of intelligence would instantly know, mean I saw a boy racer who happened to be driving an Escort..

out of the ten people who have posted on this thread, five read your posting in exactly the same way - so perhaps you should edit it

I went to school with a pseudo intellectual. She is now a Phd and university senior lecturer in sociology and psychology. Perhaps we should drop the pseudo? Does she have a kindle? No idea :-D

The current tiff on this thread just goes to show how we can interpret the same written words in different ways. Although I love my kindle, I'd be concerned if there were no new paper publications. We've all seen in our lifetime how electronic storage has changed. In a doomsday scenario, it could all be wiped out whereas if there were thousands of paper books scattered around the world, at least some copies would survive.

Anyone with a half decent command of the English language, grammar and basic logic would agree that the in no way does the phrase "Kindle-toting pseudo-intellectuals" say in any shape or form that Kindle users are pseudo-intellectuals.
Take a good look at the phrase but please do not criticise me for your inability to read it correctly.
I find it somewhat amusing that a small and predictable group chose to jump on me on this thread (not a reference to any individual of course).
If you have an actual opinion on the thread topic then please feel free to add but please do not turn this into yet another boring Errol bashing session.

people!! there are quite a few of us who read your post the same way - and we did read the post correctly

Why on earth would I want to do that? Most peculiar.

When have I once said that I neither like Kindles nor own one?

It always amuses me that people do not read posts correctly or twist them into something else lol

Errol - you obviously do not have a kindle. Kindle envy possibly? If so, why do you not get one and try it out before you criticize?

Can't afford it? I'm sure you can find someone to buy one for you so you can ;-) :-D

I downloaded the beta a couple of weeks or so back but haven't had a poke around yet.

It will take a lot to draw me away from Linux.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 21 Jan 2015 19:34

Yeah, free if you have Win7 or Win8.

I have been using the beta for a while and although a linux guru have to admit that Win10 is good. Very good in fact. Even better it will do away with IE as default browser.

Major Ups.

Real ez to use
Free for Win7/8 users. Will finally kill off XP.
Does not have a heavy hardware requirement will run fine on just about anything.
Makes integrating desktop with MS mobile apps v easy. This could be a very big deal for corporates. It will only bother Apple/Android if MS start selling phones at under $ 50. They just might ...
Split personality - behaves differently according to where it is installed.
Good security out of the box.

Downers
Will kill the nascent Linux desktop market share.
Not very good with legacy drivers.
I am not sure about Cortana (which I keep spelling as Cortina lol) - remember clippy or Peedy the Parrot? Imagine an office full of people talking to Cortana. I, Robot?

Get yours today free beta DLoad from M$.

Hi Rollo - cheers.
I already tried the IP address with no luck.
I'll have another look at it later when I am using the "big boys computer".

Rollo - slightly off topic but have you seen the W10 upgrade announcement?

I agree about VPNs - which makes the censorship announcement even more ridiculous.
