What on earth have Kindles Kobos and such to do with the subject of this thread ?

It is often a wonder to UK residents all the way up to PM that the country does not occupy much at all of the average American's attention span up to and including the White House. For the most part that includes classic English lit.

One of the fall out consequences of this, getting back to the thread topic, is that it is real ez to rent bandwidth on a US VPN for a few dollars a month and forget all about the latest wheeze of UK "security" or US geo restrictions. Unless the said usage annoys the CIA big time then the user is as free as the air. The most typical UK reason for using VPN is to watch tv. However it also allows access to any amount of crud which the US deems to be free speech and there is absolutely nothing the UK can do about it.

I am not arguing - merely asking you to have the courtesy to point out where I actually said that.

Not once have I said that Kindle users are pseudo-intellectuals.

I said "Kindle-toting pseudo-intellectuals" which has an entirely different meaning. Also, not once have I criticised the Kindle device. If I have done either or both of the above then please point out where and I will gladly either apologise or amend my comment.

supercrutch - in the context of my post I was making reference to PRINTED matter ie books as opposed to electronic media.

Not once have I said that anyone who uses a Kindle is a pseudo-intellectual - please re-read my post. Neither have I insulted nor criticised Kindle users and I certainly have not said anything disparaging about the device itself which can be a tremendous help for some people.

Budgie Rustler - an excellent definition of a group of people very often found in modern coffee shops (many of which, sadly, are former bookshops).

Oh and just a small note of interest, hospitals are happy to have patients take Kindles in which can be sanitised unlike a heap of books which can habour al sorts of nasties :-D

For those people like me who are a bit on the thick side and didn`t have a clue what a pseudo-intellectual was, I just found the definition... Seems we may have a couple on the GR Chat board. :-D :-D

pseudo-intellectual ...
1. One who attempts to flex intellect that does not exist within his or her own mind.

2. Can probably be found with a thesaurus in hand, while in a chat room, looking up new insults that are synonymous with "stupid" in order to boost his or her own undeserved ego.

3. Typical cases of pseudo-intellectualism involve pre-pubescent 15 year olds that think they have everything figured out, including, but not limited to: life, religion, politics, education, and sex. Ironically, they have never quite experienced either of the aforementioned.

4. Pretends he or she has an opinion.

5. Posseses a severe tendency to blindly and wholeheartedly believe any bullshit they hear, only to subsequently regurgitate the misinformation to anyone they see in an asinine attempt to appear more intelligent than a used, broken condom.

6. Should the victim of the verbal onslaught happen to have a differing opinion, the pseudo-intellectual will revert to his or her thesaurus and insult the opposition with words he or she never knew existed, and probably cannot even pronounce.

7. Annoyingly and constantly refers to the word antidisestablishmentarianism, as if knowledge of said word defined his or her illegitimately high intelligence quotient.

8. Typically a hypocrite; creates many, many contradictions. Most online grammar/spelling Nazis can relate.

FB friend has asked me to point out that it hasn't been banned.....it has been 'dropped' in favour of British classics.

If modern schools have libraries and I assume they do, children can read whatever books they choose to.
