Back in the 60s when I worked in a bank there was a charge of 2d stamp duty on each cheque. So each time the customer had a new cheque book of 30 cheques they had to pay 5 shillings (60 old pennies). We used to have to charge it to the customers account when we posted out the books.

QUOTE

"The one penny stamp indicates that stamp duty was paid. Stamp duty was a tax on documents, especially legal documents. Stamp duties have been levied on many different kinds of documents, but were first levied on the registration of births, deaths and marriages in 1783[1]. The system of using an adhesive penny postage stamp, introduced in 1853, was both convenient and effective[2]. The Stamp Duties Management Act 1870 included a penny tax on ‘copies of registers of births & c.’[3] Stamps marked ‘Postage and Revenue’ were introduced in 1881[4]. If you want an insight into how the system worked, take a look at the Stamp Duties Management Act 1891[5]. By the time of this marriage (1904) King George V was monarch, so it is his head that is depicted on the stamp."

"Stamp Duty"! :-D

It seems to be a way of signifying that it was legal documentation and might also indicate that a fee had been paid. A 'Short' certificate was issued free of charge. Was the one you have the 'long' foolscap version?

My birth cert of 1937 has a stamp on it too and its of Edward as he had succeeded to the throne but had abdicated in Dec 1936 I was born in March but they were still using the old stamps then

I believe it was something to do with stamp duty for documents over a certain amount that had to be paid for them
