Denburybob Report 25 Jan 2015 11:24

These people are not as illiterate as they appear. The bad grammar and spelling mistakes are deliberate, as those too stupid to recognise them are also the ones likely to be conned. Bob

DazedConfused Report 25 Jan 2015 14:36

The spelling mistakes are often done on purpose. The more literate of us will spot those and delete or ignore.

The people they aim these at and often get success with are those less able to realise that this is a scam.

This very subject was discussed on a programme in the week, cannot forvthr life of me remembdr which one. But the basic premise of the reasoning is logical. It also talked about the history of these scams, and hey go back a very long time, pre computers. The first was called the Spanish Soldier. They were started here in the UK!

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 25 Jan 2015 15:33

We had our first one back in the 80's, by post (snail mail). It was from Nigeria, but apart from that, extremely plausible.

At the time OH ran a sailing school and the letter was about buying yachts. In return for our assistance we would get commission of, I think, 15%. The figures were reasonable, the letter well written and OH gave it serious consideration - for a while.

It was the first time we had come across anything like it, but then common sense prevailed and he decided that giving out his bank details wasn't really a good idea!!

After we had received a few more, OH took them to the local police, who said they were all being sent to a special dept. in Scotland Yard.

Then someone invented emails, and the rest, as they say, is history. :-| :-| :-| :-|
