Thank you for the birthday wishes everybody. It was the day the computer had to go in for repair.

As a truly irascible old git, I was not really asking for advice as to what to do with my blanket chests, that is all organized but boasting about having them a bit and also moaning about people giving me advice I don't need about simple things like I am simple myself!

I was just a bit rattled about having something I had very evidently spent time renovating for a purpose other than to be kept in an incongruous heap of belongings being picked out as something I needed to be advised to make a feature of.

I am not a granny but I can sure suck eggs!

Happy Birthday Sharron, late as I am.

You share your birthday with my son's Maltese uncle!

My parents had a pine chest under the window in their bedroom, when we were yoing, we kids usd to stand on it to look out and wave at the coaches going by on the main road (we lived on a parrallel service road). There was another box in the second bedroom that was painted dark brown and not as nice as the pine one. When Mum died and we had to empty her council house my brothers were in such a rush they wrre chucking things out before I could blink. A dealer came to buy some things and because there was a little woodworm in the pine box they let him have him have it for peanuts before I could put it on one side but I did manage to get the other box. Sad tho as the pine one was much nicer and had better memories

Hope uou can gind the right placd for noth of yours Sharron.

Happy Birthday Sharron.

The one you haven't touched so far,

I would wash down with warm soapy water, all dirt should come off it,then you will need beeswax and give them both a good going over with the beeswax..

Fabulous shine when done.

I would put one in the hall if the hall is big enought and one in the bedroom.

Happy Birthday Sharron.
Enjoy the rest of your day.

........Sorry I'm rather late saying that, but we had a 7 hour power cut today.

The chests sound great, although I can understand that a position near freezer and cat's dirt box will hardly do them justice.
All will be well. Soon you will be able to use / show them in all their glory.

I have a large box, wood with metal banding, which I understand was probably my grandfather's tool box. He was a shipwright in Portsmouth dockyard. I'm torn between leaving in in it's inherited state - shabby, dull, but undamaged and renovating it in some way.

Happy Birthday Sharron...... <3

Strip the other one and use them for what they are intended...blanket boxes.

If you use them as coffee tables as some do you will end up getting rings and stains on them. Also things will get put inside and you'll have to clear the top to get into it.

We had a large one that I stripped which was made of Cedar. A lovely box with a handle each end, Dau has it now.

Happy birthday Sharron <3

When everything is sorted, and the workmen have gone, I'm sure you'll find the perfect places for your blanket boxes. Don't give one to the cat.

My husband had one when I moved in with him I don't know where it came from, anyway I have it at the bottom of the bed in the spare room with blankets in it. It looks quite old

I would love to have one at the end of my bed, so I could put the duvet in it for the summer. Alternatively as a place to store all my family history stuff. If it's a flat top it would make a nice coffee table as suggested and you could keep magazines or knitting or whatever inside for when you are relaxing.

Without knowing the size of your house, it's difficult to give practical advise. I'd be a little worried about keeping one in the bathroom in case there any negative changes to the wood due to the humidity.

All our Christmas decorations are kept in an old pine blanket box. The TV stands on top when we are watching it and is hidden behind when not in use. These old boxes are such beautiful and useful pieces of furniture. If only they could talk we would probably find our family history much easier!

Hi Sharon, Happy birthday, you could put bun feet on each corner and make one into a coffee table.
if there is room use the other in the bathroom to put towels in.or bedding in a bedroom,in the hall for your shoes, not very exciting ideas, but maybe.

I have two lovely blanket chests. They have been in the family for a very long time, Fred couldn't ever remember them not being there. I think they must have belonged to great- grandmother, Sally, who married in the 1860s.

I have stripped and waxed one of them because it was painted pink and the other is still in it's original stain and grain which does it no favours but that is how it always has been.

Currently they are piled one upon the other under the television with the microwave upon them beside the freezer, tumble drier and cat's dirt box.

A woman we know, who has never seen our house function as a home that doesn't have to accommodate a hospital bed, hoist and wheelchair, came to deliver a birthday card, for which I am very grateful, last night. Sitting in the little space within which we currently function and enjoying a cup of tea, she looked around the room and commented upon how lovely the blanket chests are and asked me why I had not made a feature of them.

Answers on a postcard please.
