You know Dermot, I`m sure I saw him on a quiz show where you went into a box to answer questions and I think he did extremely well.
I believe he was a college student at the time. :-S

A missed opportunity & a pity not to have had the topic as a 'two-sided' discussion.

No doubt about it though, Stephen is an excellent speaker - a joy to listen to his proper use of our beloved language.

we all have our own thinking about God, he could be in the image of man and sitting on a throne or a greater power that invented the world and has let it get out of control.. or even an energy somewhere out in the ether that fuels our existence.. a light that we can pray to and draw energy from..that makes us feel strong and calm if and when we accept it.

I think that Stephen answered well the question that was put to him

The write up in the Mirror was obviously biased right from the start .
ie... Header title .... Quote*...Stephen Fry's furious rant about God: (furious?) :-S

Watch the Video... and where was the Quote* "launching into a rant" bit?...
I must have been watching a different video to Zoe Shenton

The devil uses many disguises. Who's face is he/she using today?

well to an extent Susan, but he was responding to the scenario as put to him...and which he doesn't believe is possible .

I think it's probably fair to say that if you suddenly found that someone you didn't believe existed or had been led to believe was kind and loving, was 'responsible' , either by commission or omission, for events you found upsetting, then why would you not be angry?

I freely admit, that I don't see why God, if he is omnipotent didn't think again on certain aspects of his creations and doesn't intervene now that the world is seemingly going to hell in a handcart.... but by the same token I recognise that if God exists what we know of him/ her or it, is very sketchy and based on impressions perpetuated through the millenia so probably we have little conception of what God actually is really? ie we have now made God in our own image, rather than vice versa so we assume he could choose to change things.

There may be reasons why God doesn't intervene, which only God knows and which at some point we may all find out, but I think it is reasonable to be angry at something you can't understand.. and he is a thoughtful man, SF that is, and like most people who think deeply, about the great 'what ifs' it is hard to understand why, when you see how something could have been 'done better' , that the God that so many people believe in and pray to, didn't arrange it that way?

Just read it and what comes across strongly is S F's Anger.......anger over the workings of a God he doesn't believe in?.......Strange! Why so angry over a being he doesn't think exists......Doesn't make sense!

No it wasn't a "furious rant"... if the mirror think that amounts to that they don't want to meet me when I lose it lol.

I Think you make your own Heaven or Hell on this earth .not one person can quantify , the whole cycle of life, my own opinion is more birth control for very poor countrys ,it is tragic to see babys being born with awfull defects .its not their fault .but drugs & drink & Smoking parents does not help you to have a perfect child .nor does poverty. maybe barking up the wrong tree here .To much wealth in part & i am all jack springs to mind .as the human race we cant right all the wrongs .Its a very selfish greedy world out there .God didnt create it Man did .such a shame .when you look at all the wonder thats out there .simple things a childs smile .country walks .beautiful scenery .wish we could go back to basics & pull the plug on a lot of negatives in this day & age Barbra

Seems like you can have a vote on what you think of Stephen Fry`s views .

It was called a furious rant... It didn`t appear to be a "furious rant" to me, quite the contrary.

My thoughts are, in order,

Hasn't Gay Byrne aged!

Fair enough argument

Wouldn't it be interesting, assuming the existence of God, to be standing at the gates when Stephen Fry gets an answer.

Isn't that the struggle we all have? whether you believe in God or not, to reconcile that we are so intelligent as a species, and probably have most if not all the answers to the pain of life at our fingertips but are too busy ( or too selfish ) to find them ? For instance what I mean by that is there are treatments for some conditions which leave children in the 3rd world blind, or sick or dead, and we have them in the west but because 'we' won't share them without exchange of money those children never have a chance. Or if all the money our species spends on armaments and war was put to finding the cure for all the incurable diseases, how much quicker that could be a reality.
