Microsoft, not double glazing :-)

Got this message this morning..............

With its radical and impressive changes, the release of Windows 10 is highly anticipated. To make the change as easy as possible, Microsoft offering the new operating system for free to existing customers!

For the first year after Windows 10 launches, any device with Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade for free.

The new Windows 10 design is bright, bold and intuitive. It boasts a classic desktop environment with the latest Windows experience. New features include multiple desktops and simple switching between apps for easy use, as well as the capability to make the Start menu full-screen with one touch.

The new OS will also be optimised for touch screen devices, allowing users to sync their information between their devices and computer.

Windows 10 is set to be released this year, with the Technical Preview ending on 15 April 2015. An exact price and release date to the public are yet to be confirmed.

I was reading about this yesterday seems Windows 8 was not a success but nobody seems to know what happened to 9?????

Windows has never really followed a sequence of numbers.

One possible (and perfectly plausible) reason for not using 9 is to avoid software confusion with Windows 95 and 98.

However, since when has Microsoft used a numerical sequence for naming Windows?

The numbers (eg W7 or W8 etc) are no reference whatsoever to the actual programme version/release.

Win10 skips #9 'cos of the phrase "come in number 9 yr time is up". It is a chameleon OS which will configure itself for the situation eg desktop tablet notebook phone. Apple has not managed to do this. Win10 is lean most of the legacy code has been stripped out improving performance and security. It will run fine on most systems made in the last 5 years and prob. 10. The free UG for Win7 and Win8 users is a no brainer. Developers and Oems will def. go for it. I have a beta but will stay with Linux, Errol too. Nice though it is Win10 is designed to lure the user into Microsoft everywhere just like Apple or Google.

It doesn't seem as if things are going to get better for those of us still using desktops or laptops. :-0 :-(

Why not give it a go and download the beta (free) ?

Win10 is a whole lot better for desktop users than Win8 as it does not assume a touch screen, there is a proper start button and you can avoid tiles. There is a lot of useful innovation.

Without any doubt it will be a massive hit. Like them or hate them after years of stasis Microsoft are on the move.

It is a final goodbye to Internet Explorer Win10 will have a new browser working title "Spartan" which uses http/2.
