My father recently celebrated his 70th birthday and to celebrate the occasion we had a party for family and friends. Later, my father drew my brother and myself aside and presented us each with a leather bound book. Our surprise was that he was the one who had actually written it :-).

The book covers a period of 50 years and the first entry made was whilst my father was at university. At that time he was experiencing a few problems in his own personal life and came to the decision that he would keep a journal detailing the facts and how he actually overcame his difficulties. The following entries then detail major events in his life and the lessons he has learned through them. As well as making fascinating reading it has enabled me to understand my father in a way that I would have never have done, had the journal not existed.

Has anyone else been surprised in such a way?
