I to get fed up of drivers dawdling i call it in the second & third lane ..you have to put your foot down to get past ..the worst culprits are when two HGV vehicles are in lane one & two & they just stay there Motorways are good if you use them properly ,Barbra

there are too many drivers that don't drive to the conditions..

it's the dawdlers that drive too slowly on a clear road that cause bunching up and frustration........and accidents
why oh why do I have to overtake in the fourth motorway lane because the middle lane hoggers are only going at 60-65???

oooooooooooops they are not accidents any more but Incidents

depends on the access Ann doesn't it?

I get moaned at for driving much too close to the car behind me!

It seems the promised driverless cars may be beneficial to us all.

AnninGlos Report 15 Feb 2015 15:04

And how many enter it at 40????

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 15 Feb 2015 14:46

Average speed is just that..........if you enter a zone at say 40 where the average is 50, then its likely you'd need to get to 80, to achieve the average for that length of zone

but as most car speedos are 3-4 mph optimistic at 50...............
check yours, against a sat nav.......

Motorways these days are frightening. Despite all the laws brought in regarding use of mobiles, eating at the wheel etc etc. When you travel on motorways it is obvious the laws are broken regularly. Speeding is horrific and the best thing they are doing is bringing in the average speed checks. Where this is in operation most drivers stick to the limit. So we should have more. One of the worst stretches we drive fairly regularly on is the M6 junctions 16 to 19, and nobody seems to know why this stretch has so many accidents.

Well I will just say .I have been cut off by An Irish HGV On a roundabout on the A75.he could have caused a serious accident ..& on a country lane by a young driver .wrong side of the road on a bend .i nearly finished up in the field ..Its tough out there just be carefull & keep calm :-)

"but you still get drivers .on the outside lanes.passing at faster speeds ,& then they cause congestion as.they try & get in to inner lanes as speed cameras are fitted ..they should be fined & given a ban "

indeed so which is why average speed radar detection is being rolled out across the UK targeted at dangerous high use stretches of motorway and long term road works with cones etc. The Daily Mail and Daily Express rail against this on the M3 as if it was a denial of human rights. Actually an affirmation of the right to life.

"not just cars but HGV & coaches ! "

Unfortunately around half of UK fatal accidents involve HGVs and coaches thanks to their massive kinetic energy. The standard of driving and maintenance expected must be far higher than for a private car driver. UK authorities are very worried about disproportionate share of serious accidents involving non UK holders of HGV and coach licenses. They are even more worried about the high number who do not hold any current HGV/coach license!

Agree with the signs for less speed because of bad road conditons .but i travel on motorways with cones & huge signs. flashing lights slow down.& then 50mh.then 40 then 30.but you still get drivers .on the outside lanes.passing at faster speeds ,& then they cause congestion as.they try & get in to inner lanes as speed cameras are fitted ..they should be fined & given a ban not just cars but HGV & coaches !

Driving in fog on motorways is so dangerous that I don't. If it is unexpected then I just wait out the time in the nearest service station otherwise I go another day.

Driving has very little to do with logic and everything to do with pyschology and deeply embedded human traits. Highway and automotive enegineers work like mad to alleviate the basic insanity of our highways. Literally at every turn they run into heavy opposition from popular newspapers and politicians worried about short term budgets.

The roots of large tail end shunts in bad weather on motorways lies in the need for drivers to keep in touch with the car in front so they are all far too close. Any minor mistake will instantly cause mayhem.

The simplest fix is to install more reactive speed limit signs in fog hot spots together with average speed radar. M1 Junc 10-13 is a well known fog zone. Speed limit in heavy fog max 30mph. Longer term safe distance detection in cars is best fix but universal use is years away. It could usefully be made compulsory for HGV and coaches now.

Driving into vehicles stopped in the emergency lane is also strongly linked to the the "follow the leader" syndrome and is especially common at times when the human pysche prefers to be asleep i.e. 11pm - 7am. It is counter intuitive but if you end up stuck on the hard shoulder switch off running lights leaving just the hazard flashers on. Do NOT stay in the vehicle and if possible get to the other side of the barrier.

In the wider sense the massacre of public transport and in particular the railways esp. 1920-1979 removed a safe means of getting around the country in favour of a failed technology.

I think I saw a comment (in a newspaper) yesterday saying that those automatic lights on cars don't switch themselves on in fog - you have to do it manually.

I live in a river valley so there are often pockets of mist or fog. It is amazing how many people don't even bother putting their side lights on. :-P

I agree, Barbra.
I don't drive - and don't fancy learning now :-(

My sister refuses to drive on motorways. She leaves a decent gap between herself and the car in front, then some moron decides thy can 'slip' into the gap, which means brakes on, and a possible shunt from the car behind, as the driver prefers to tailgate.

The awfull events on the news about the motorway`s & loss of life & injury`s .really upsets me .why do drivers go to fast in fog .its better to get to your destination late than not at all ..after the accidents folks were still going to fast overtaking & on the outside lane .will they never learn ??.I have driven thousands of miles been driving 50yrs .still i leave a gap between the car in front & use my mirrors ..so many drivers have tunnel vision .To much Carnage & thoughlessness. on the roads .RIP <3 Barbra x
