The fig tree

DH came home and had a few words to say about the fallen branches.

I told him I wasn't happy with the neighbour....... with more than a few words, that were almost as bad as DH's.

DH got into the garden with the chainsaw, wearing a hard hat & safety glasses. I stayed out there, out of reach of falling branches, and watched. Don't know what I would have done if a branch fell, and DH wouldn't have heard it over the noise of the chainsaw.

He was there for at least half an hour, and the neighbour didn't come over.

The chopped up branches are still in the garden.

We'll split the cost of removing the tree with the neighbour, but I refuse to pay the full bill.

What a cheeky so and so. Hope you can get through to him that he has caused this problem and needs to deal with it

Good luck, and be careful when you are out and about.

about half an hour ago............ CRAAAAASH! Another BIG branch fell down.

I went out for a look, and the neighbour joined me, in our driveway.

He went into our garden (even though I said not to, because another branch might fall on him)...........

He came back up and said "that was a big branch, maybe you should get someone out to cut those other branches off"

:-S

I asked "what about the branches on your side?".... "they're OK, they'll only fall on the grass"

So.... he poisoned the tree, and seems to think we have to pay to remove it??

I don't think so.

I couldn't stay & talk to him, two reasons..... I was angry, and I had a cortisone injection in my hip this morning.... a wee bit sore...........

I'll wait for DH to get home, and he can have a "chat" with the Tree Poisoner.

Not happy!

Neighbour is in his 60s, and he's fit... but not as fit as my DH. He's fitter than I am, but just about everybody is fitter than me!

I told DH that he should speak to neighbour, but he won't! When DH gets into the garden with the chainsaw I'm sure neighbour will come and see what he's doing, and help.

He's a very nice man, always helpful, we can't understand why he poisoned the tree, he's usually very "green" minded.

We were up the coast this morning (southern Qld) and it was pouring with rain.... blue sky here. The weather is weird.

I'm taking my hanging baskets down before Saturday, in case they blow away.

What a worry, I would be livid if I was you. Is he younger, fitter than you or your o.h.? I would expect him to remove the branch and the whole tree. Why not discuss this with him and see what he says? Maybe you need to get some legal advice or speak to your local council.

Good luck with the bad weather, batten down the hatches and stay safe

lucky you!!

NOT!

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 18 Feb 2015 00:24

I hope not!

Our back garden is on a slope, the tree is half-way down the slope. If the tree falls over, hopefully it will fall downhill........ it might take out a fence!

The garden is BIG.

There's a cyclone brewing off the coast of Qld........ we should get the tailend of it at the weekend.

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Feb 2015 20:20

is there any danger to your house?

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 17 Feb 2015 11:04

I think the tree has been there a long time... probably before the neighbour moved in.

Lots of big branches were hanging over the fence of the neighbours behind us...... and they got tree loppers in to remove them. I don't know who paid for that.

No idea why he decided to kill it....... it was healthy, and would probably outlive all of us!

But..... if push comes to shove....... how do we prove that he killed it? He told us he did, but he can always deny it.

A big storm is expected here over the weekend, strong winds & heavy rain... I'm staying inside.

Thanks Bob

But LadyScozz as your neighbour decided to do something about it he should now be responsible for getting rid of it completely .

Afraid I wouldn't be happy that he had put me and mine in danger now with falling branches

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 17 Feb 2015 09:22

according to Wiki, Shirley,

it starts as a parasite growth which throttles the host tree......likely nobody "planted" it as such......

Bob

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 17 Feb 2015 09:20

surely its up to him to have it felled? properly........he killed it and assumed responsibility for it........

It's a big tree alright ,but too big for a garden I would think .

Did he plant it ?

I wasn't happy when he told us.

It was a beautiful tree.

Now we're reluctant to go into the garden.

DH wasn't pleased when he came home and saw the big branches on the ground. I'm wondering how we're going to get rid of them. Too big to lift, so he'll have to use a chainsaw...... and I'm worried the vibration may cause more branches to drop! A hard hat won't be enough protection.

I suggested getting the neighbour to do it........... DH made a weird noise, didn't sound like laughter.

Beautiful trees, but they don't belong in suburban back gardens!

He didn't tell us until it started losing its leaves.

:-(

they're beautiful trees :-)

LadyScozz

is now dangerous!

It's on the border between us and a neighbour. He poisoned it a while back, it lost its leaves over a few months and started dropping branches. I don't think he thought it through..... what was going to happen when it died?

Today is very windy, and a couple of hours ago there was an a great loud CRACK and a THUMP..... another big branch has fallen into our garden.

I'm not brave enough to go into our garden... even if I could, with my wonky hip.

There's a photograph on this link, give you an idea of the size of the tree.

We didn't plant it, it was here when we arrived!
