Danny

It takes time .not something you can do in an evening !

You need to verify info as you go by getting certificates to back up what you find as it's easy to go off course and down the wrong family tree.

If you know your grandparents names you can look for their marriages and then work backwards from their . Certs will give you their ages at marriage and their fathers names ,if known .
Surnames for couples can be usedl to look for children born as after 1911 the mmn is on the GRO records

FreeBMD website is free and easy to use.

Once you get back to 1911 you can then look for families on the census and work back on earlier census's

But your research does need to be verified if you want to be accurate with your tree ,as we all do :-D

Danny I echo what Shirley says. It's a lovely idea to do a tree for your mum but it's going to take you years not days to produce.

Even if you find a hot match to your grandparents, you will need to check everything as a lot of trees on here contain inaccurate information.

I suggest that if you're stuck you post as much information as you have on the "Find Ancestors" board and you'll get plenty of help for other members.

Go to this link and down load the e-book. That should give you hints on how to use the site.

Although its a lovely idea for a gift, you need to revise your time scale. Her birthday or Christmas is more realistic but even then you may have hit a brick wall.
