Gareth I know you're keen to get your tree started but if you get Fred's parents wrong then the rest of your tree will also be wrong.

Most of us have been researching for years; we could post information on Harry but in this case it's not in your best interests as we could be leading you on completely the wrong trail.

So please take the advise given and do nothing more until you've bought Fred's birth cert.

Once you have the cert then add to this thread and someone will give you as much help as they can but you will need to buy further certs in the future.

Where have you got the new info from, you were convinced his mother was Gladys and 20 years younger yesterday

How do you know Harry was born 1890 Burton? .....where and when did they die?

If they are his parents you need the marriage cert to see who they name as their fathers

her death certificate would not show mother's maiden name .................. at least not in 1971.

The GRO index only shows the mothers maiden name on entries after Sep 1911. It's odd that her birth reg doesn't show her mmn if she was deffinatively born after then.

I really do think that you have to buy Fred's birth certificate ...... that will us his parents' full names, and a better chance of finding them.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Mar 2015 03:33

I have found birth registrations for two Gladys Henshaw's born in Staffordshire between 1909 and 1915

One was born in 1909,

but this one is the one in 1915

Walsall is the Registration District

Births Jun 1915 (>99%)

Henshaw Gladys Davies Walsall 6b 1398

I still cannot find a Gladys Henshaw married to a male Mellor

There are 2 possibilities .........

1. Gladys had been married before, and her married name was used on her marriage to Mr Mellor .............. until we know that, it is almost impossible to find her

2. Gladys and Mr Mellor did not marry, but lived common-law. He was acknowledged as the father of Fred, and hence his name is on the birth certificate.

There is a record of a Gladys Henshaw who married a Mr Barnard in 1935, and dying in 2003 who could be the one born in 1915 or not

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007

Name: Gladys Barnard
Birth Date: 20 Mar 1915
Date of Registration: Apr 2003
Age at Death: 88
Registration district: Walsall
Inferred County: Staffordshire
Register Number: B67A
District and Subdistrict: 075/1B
Entry Number: 85

In which case, she is probably not yours!

gareth Report 4 Mar 2015 01:50

thankyou very much for the reply, ive just been told that we think fred mellors mothers first name was Gladys henshaw, but still not 100percent on her mothers full name,

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Mar 2015 01:32

Gareth ..............

waht you find is the INDEX to biorth registrations, which shows the birth name of the baby and the maiden name of the mother (if after July 1911).

To see any other information you really do have to buy the birth certificate ....... which costs £9.25 from the General Records Office.

First, most of the members who help on here, find it much easier to use another site for birth (marriage and death) registrations ........ we use the free site

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

On there, I found this as the only birth fro a Fred Mellor in Staffordshire around 1935

Births Dec 1935 (>99%)

Mellor Fred Henshaw Uttoxeter 6b 423

This shows that his mother's maiden name was Henshaw

Now we have to look to see if we can find a male Mellor marrying a female Henshaw, which would give a hint as to Fred's mother's full name

I cannot find a male Mellor marrying a female Henshaw anywhere in England or Wales between 1920 and 1945 ................ so now we are stuck!

It seems that you might have to buy that birth certificate, unless someone else can find the information on another site for you.

To order the certificate, go to

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

you have to register, but it is free

click on Order Certificates Online

follow instructions

when it asks if you have the GRO registration number, click on YES ........... that's the set of 2 numbers after Uttoxeter, ie 6b 423

The certificate will cost £9.25 including post and handling
