Does she have any other medical conditions?

Insomnia is common with people suffering from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome, panic attacks, etc.

It sounds more as if she has a medical problem rather than physcological so a hypnotist may not be the answer as they play on the mind set .

I did go to a hypnotist once to try and help with my eating habits and it did work for a time as my mind would go into no I cant do that when temptation struck . It did wear off though and it was costly so didn't go back for a top up !

I used to read before going to sleep, but I no longer find it comfortable to read in bed ............... and, anyway, I usually find myself so engrossed in the book that I become wide awake :-D

I do play Solitaire on the computer before switching off and going to bed.

I sign out of all sites, don't do any work of any kind ............. just get the Solitaire up, and then play it almost mindlessly until my head starts nodding

I read before I sleep and it´s the wind down time I need. Occasionally I have fallen asleep before I have meant to. This doesn´t always guarantee a full nights sleep mind.

I hope your daughter gets help that works soon for her.

I do know that if I stay on the pc until I go to bed, I take a long time to get to sleep.

I had hypnotherapy, while going through the divorce from hell, for stress and insomnia.

As part of the treatment I was given a tape of the relaxation part of the session, when I went under, to play at home when I felt bad.

It was guaranteed to send me off for a good few hours and I woke far more refreshed than when I 'slept' without it.

In my experience it was money well spent.

magnets under the mattress?

Sounds weird, but my Mother swore by them, claimed she had the best sleep ever.

Mattress covers with magnets are available.

I recently saw a programme where the problem was solved by the person wrapping themselves up warmly in bed. Ie wear your dressing gown to bed and it worked!

I know when i sleep with my dressing gown over the top of my duvet, my feet keep warm and I do sleep better.

Does she have an electric blanket..just a thought.

Poor woman, hope she finds a solution soon.

have to say because of my asthma and severe sinus problem, i actually hate going to bed because when i lay down, it makes it worse. I have 4 pillows minimum and sometimes sleep on the sofa sitting up and actually sleep better than in bed.

Staying on here chatting and playing word games makes me feel sleepy and helps sometimes or reading in bed.

it almost always takes me up to an hour to fall asleep ............ but I can't tell you what I do to make it happen, 'cos I don't know.

I'm also awake 2 or 3 times in the night

I did go to see a sleep doctor ................. once!!

She lost me when she told me that no-one should be in bed for longer than 7 hours ................... not "sleep" for more than 7 hours, but be in bed!

so ....................... the fact that I like to lie in bed in the morning listening to the local morning show was a downright no-no :-S

or I might lie in bed for about an hour at night listening to a CD (only when OH is away) was also a no-no :-0

I have a ritual every night to send myself to sleep - I do lots of lists in my head - put the days of the week in alphabetical order, months of the year the same

name as many countries as I can in alphabetical order

name the states of USA in alphabetical order - I usually fall to sleep in the middle of one of these lists

Denburybob

Denburybob Report 8 Mar 2015 20:53

This is not my problem, it is my daughter's. She has been to the sleep clinic, 24 hours wired up to electrodes etc. She goes 3/4/5 days at a time without sleep, her longest being nine days. Doctors have tried all sorts of pills, even dopamine, which had such horrendous side effects that she had to stop taking them. This has been going on for about 20 years. Anything that does work, only does so for a night or two, then it is back to more sleepless nights. Bob

As someone whose been through a sleep clinic I can tell you some of the things not to do.

Do not have caffeine type drinks tea, coffee coke etc from lunchtime. Do not drink alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol affect your sleep patterns. Do not go to bed on a full stomach.

and a few to do
Do try to have a regular pattern to your sleep, this was stressed as v important, try to go to bed and rise the same time every day. Do relax for at least 30 mins before bed. Make sure your bed and bedroom are comfortable. Try to get some mild exercise like a short walk during the day.

My sleep problem was different but these rules apply to you as well. I'm sleeping well now. :-)

sounds as if a trip to the doctor is required for medication, instead of trying to continue with self help

Does anyone have experience of either hypnotherapy or blue light filters as an aid to insomnia. And PLEASE! do not add advice about hot drinks, hot baths, magnesium etc. They have all been tried. Even Chinese herbal and acupuncture. Bob
