I was absolutely amazed that Messages are deleted if a person closes their membership. So not only my replies to their account BUT the replies to my personnel message box/account disappear!!!
Sensitive information that I thought safe in MY messages have gone.
SO please be aware this can happen.
I welcome other peoples views on this.

Do you mean that they've cancelled their account rather than just let it lapse?

If the info you received has disappeared because of that, it must be upsetting if you haven't copied it to somewhere else.

ALWAYS transfer important information to your own hard drive.


Never trust an outside site to always keep your records.



Yes, it is known that if a person tells GR that they wish to leave GR, then all their messages, and posts on the Boards, will be deleted.

It is quite rare though I think.


Most people just let their membership lapse, they are then dropped down to Free membership, and their tree and messages remain


The other time when trees and messages are removed are if GR has banned a member ................ and this is very rare




Are you sure that the member(s) that have affected you removed themselves??

It is entirely possible that they have died, or become incapacitated, and a family relative or a close friend has notified GR of this and asked GR to close the account.

Posts on the boards are not deleted Sylvia , just private messages are removed if the account is deleted by themselves or GR

Absolutely gutted this very sensitive information has gone.
Stupidly thought GR -MY messages were safe.
I pay them money for this account. Have to use logins/passwords.

I haven't looked but does it warn anywhere of this? If not maybe it should because it is an easy mistake to make.

Now, strangely, I have just checked on somebody who is not a member now and I still have a message on here from them.

Do they have a lapsed account or totally cancelled one? That could be the difference.

Free members message posts will stay only deleted accounts would have posts removed

Also would someone who likes to tidy up their contacts list and delete contacts, wouldn't those posts be removed as well?

I have only ever deleted one contact after sending a pm I didn't wish her to receive in the end.... So hopefully she never got it

Apparently she resigned her membership.

Can't understand why the person would delete her account, don't think it lapsed as was in recent contact. Must look into the "small print" to see if there are any warnings of this! What I cannot understand is how GR Delete messages in MY account. :-(

I have just looked in the Help and Jax is right. If you delete a contact then all messages to and from that contact will be deleted as well.

If the contact was really recent, can you ask if they deleted you and get the info. again?

Thanks, Andysmum ALL the messages & contact has been deleted.(even the most recent) Its so sad as it was very, very sensitive issues. They were in contact with me over many years, :-(

So has this persons tree also been deleted?

they delete the received and sent messages from the cotnact's account ................... that is what removes messages from your account.

We have been recommending that members do that ................. as otherwise their trees remain on here for ever and a day, and other members get very upset if they try to contact a no-longer active member and never hear back. Some get very rude about it!


Do you think that might be a possibility?
