I nearly threw out my radio a couple of weeks ago.
I think it was Saturday Live on Radio 4.
Not only was this bloke starting each sentence with 'So', every sentence was a question as his sentences went up at the end.

....and he was older than 15! :-|

Don't get me started!!

Apart from "I" when it should be "me", why doesn't anybody use "might" any more? Everything is "may" even when the past tense is more appropriate.

The other thing is commas. I was taught precisely where they should be used, but an easier way to get them in the right place is to put them where you take a breath. So, this latest fashion for sentences like this - The bus to town, leaves at 10 o'clock. - is nonsense!!

"call myself" - should be "Call me" what's that all about :-S

definitely applies to me!!

Grammar school taught in the 1950s

a huge part of my job in the 1970s through to retirement was editing everything written by anyone where I worked .......................... and that was all based solely on English lessons between the ages of 11 and 16

I cringe when I hear or read "off of", "very unique" (snap Pat!), or "extremely unique"

not to mention punctuation

The majority of people under the age of 35 or 30 over here cannot speak without using "like" 3 or 4 times in a sentence.

and we won't mention the effect of "txt spk" :-P

I'm a grammar school girl taught in the 50s too and am appalled by the current lack of grammar

I had a colleague who "went" instead of "said" Every time he said "I went" I would shout at him "SAID! SAID!"

I used to take the minutes of a local community group and one of the leading members kept saying "pacific" instead of "specific" Grrrrr!!!!!

Sir John Cheke (16 June 1514 – 13 September 1557) was an English classical scholar who wrote: -

‘I am of this opinion that our own tung should be written cleane and pure, unmixt and unmangeled with borowing of other tunges; wherein if we take not heed by tiim, ever borowing and never paying, she shall be fain to keep her house as bankrupt‘.

only yesterday I said the same thing to a friend of mine ;-)

I recall a TV interview with a man involved in some strike or other - he said "We are being used as political prawns" :-D

They're, their and there, three different meanings.

Your and you're, two different meanings.

"Must of" when it should be "must have" makes me scream.

"Sat" instead of "sitting".

The rising inflection should be punished by severe beatings. *glares at Australia*

But then I used to teach O level English, so I am very pedantic about these things.

I was in Australia recently and my d.i.l is a guide leader and they had a pop up stall outside a d.i.y store selling hot dogs.

I was amused to hear the customers using ..."can I get" when asking for one....i.e......can I get one with onions please.?

When I heard someone say....Could I have....I knew they weren't Australians!
