Maybe GR personnel are too busy keeping an eye on G007's threads, including his loyal detractors. :-S

GR mucked up my membership as well

Got no confidence at all in the GR Team whether that is Support or Technical. Same old problem of them not answering direct questions

Why do they bother having a Community Manager when she is seldom on site.

Some of the Team on Facebook treat the members like idiots.

I should have renewed membership Feb 25ish, but nothing happened, I got a message to say my card details were different from last years! No they weren't, i checked with my bank who told me gr hadn't renewed on my out of date card last year despite them telling me the company who do the renewals etc had taken the money from my outdated debit card. Every day I tried to renew and each time got a message saying website wouldn't load or something of that wording.

Despite several messages to and from support team I could not sort things out but maybe due to desperation to post on the thread about Joyce, I managed to renew with no problem. I think Joyce had a hand in things!

Means I was absent for over 2 weeks, mind you, no one missed me till the news of Joyce was posted, and then bless her Uzzi realised I hadn't posted on the thread and contacted me to see if I was ok. She had seen me on fb so knew I was still about, but kind of her to check on me.

So glad I am back on gr now, and can say my piece when I want lol

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that there was a thread where the OP was RR'd on Friday .............. it was still showing on Wednesday :-(



I've been saying for a couple of years that the aim is to downgrade GR, and steer everything to FMP.


This of course goes completely contrary to what was promised to the Competitions Board who had to approve the sale of GR to BS .......................

it was to be maintained as a separate site because the sale put 3 of the 4 leading genealogy sites in the UK in the hands of one company .

Ancestry of course is the 4th site.


but if most members have left, and revenue is down ................. what else is a company to do but combine the 2 sites, let GR stay as a member-help site, or get rid of it?



and that is exactly what is happening ...................... the older (ie, long time) members have been leaving, most of us do not (and never did) use the records section.

New members are joining, but are having problems in finding records that they have been led to believe are on the site ................... not always true!




and the site is getting older, slower, and much less attractive.

Those were good times, Katherine. GR's refusal to deal with trolls over the years is part of the reason the general board has declined, I think.

There used to be some really offensive stuff that they left for days and people got disillusioned. The "report" button was meant to help with that but unfortunately they don't deal with reports swiftly and it's abused as people report posts because they don't agree with what's written or want people to "stay off" their threads.

Most of my old board friends have gone and I miss the laughs we used to have on here. There used to be some interesting debates as well when people argued articulately and logically and also quoted sources.

The boards have been neglected for so long that they are beyond help, I think.

Guinevere - please don't ask Genes to revamp the site. Every time they do that it goes even more downhill!

You are certainly right that 10 years ago you couldn't keep up with the boards - but that was at a time when there wasn't so much available on the internet. Every time a new census came online there were loads of requests for help finding families but now that all census years that are available have been online for quite some time I think lots of people have found all they wanted to and so don't use the boards any more.

I'm quite surprised that the General Chat board isn't busier though. I never used to come on here when the other boards were busy but I do now that those boards have slowed right down.

Every word in every thread will potentially amuse or offend some esoteric reader.

The boards have been at the wall for at least 6 or 7 years. 10 years ago you couldn't keep up with them. But then other forums arrived and, of course, facebook.

The GR format is very old fashioned. A revamp would help.

The thing that surprised me most over the weekend occurances was why any one would bother to reply to such utter tosh. As said by Island, nobody has to answer and if they didnt, would soon get fed up and go away.

Also the number of other threads in relation to the original. Sadly these boards are slowly, going to the wall. Even interesting topics get little response.

Perhaps the troller is being paid to kill the board altogether.

3 more Spam messages were posted on Success today, and have been reported.

The lack of intervention on other issues are probably down to budget cuts. Fewer staff = more essential work p.p.

To be fair though, the 'team' is a few 20/30 somethings who are probably instructed to leave a few badly behaved old farties to slug it out among themselves.
Nobody *has* to 'feed the troll' - perhaps some enjoy being irritated?

The spam on 'Success' is a different issue. Some has been reported but remains on show :-S

I don't think FB can be blamed - we were once told that is a seperate team.

I think they are far to interested in their Facebook page to bother about this site anymore.

They said the threads on Success Board would be removed "asap" - that was 24 hours ago.

Goodness only knows what their "Technical department" does all day long!!

I used to spend hours on end on this site - now it's only the odd 10 minutes here and there as most of the "old" members seem to have disappeared - and I'm not surprised.

I'm not bothered about no replies, Barbra, it's just the apparent lack of interest GR is showing in it's own website.

I could, of course be wrong about the Success boards.

Perhaps GR is making money from those threads on the Success Board. It could be a new money making venture.

..or it could be hackers...
