Dermot, I did laugh at your post about teenagers :-D Teenage boys also love "the great smell of linx" it lingers around long after they have left the house.

My Dad always used imperial leather soap. Many years ago he had industrial dermatitis and was told by the factory nurse to use it. It seemed to work. It comes in a shower gell now.

We have which ever liquid hand wash which is on offer, simple soap, linx shower gell :-D, and the christmas body shop supply.

We only use bar soap

We refuse to use anti-bacterial anything ..............

........... there is too much anti-bacterial stuff around, leading to resistant bacteria, and also getting rid of "good" bacteria. Wiping a cutting board with an anti-bacterial wipe or spray doesn't really do anything, as the agent and the board are not in contact for long enough!

Just washing in soap and water, making sure the soap lathers well, is far better than anti-bacterial stuff.

I only use pure glycerine soap .......... and have a bar by the bathroom sink and another in the shower.

Other soaps bother my skin now

OH uses anything that's going .................. we used Lux soap for over 40 years, but it seems to be off the market as I haven't been able to buy it for about 4 years.

He did bring a bar of "Camay" back from China about 5 years ago, it had been in his hotel bathroom. He used it for 2 weeks, and brought it back because it was a full-sized bar .........

........... the labelling was apparently correct, it looked and smelled like Camay. But it was NOT Camay!

We couldn't get rid of it! It lathered poorly, but he continued to use it in the bath tub ............ it lasted about 18 months before I finally threw it out! He does have very regular baths!!!

Well ladies and gents, thanks for your interesting replies.

I love the smell of coal tar soap and pears and have some in my bathroom.

I agree a liquid soap in a dispenser is less messy but i find that there isn't enough lather as with the bar. Camay is another fav of mine too.

There was one that was yellow and smelt strongly of lemon and can't remember the name although I thought it was lemon "shield?"

I often use bubble bath on my sponge in the shower though, makes loads of bubbles!

Not used bar soao for at least 30 years as it was drying my skin with the alkaline in it.

Went on to liquid soap until I had to have 2 operations on my wrists and used Optima Australian Tea tree deep cleansing skin wash since 1997 because the hospital told me possible 100% sure of catching MRSA.

I was the only one that didn't get MRSA out of 10 of the people having the same operation on that one day..

Brilliant for lots of lather.

I use a liquid body wash in the shower but a handmade bar of soap on the sink for handwashing etc.

A friend of my son makes the soap and I buy it in bulk from her. It has a lovely "sherbet lemon" sort of smell.

I use a liquid anti-bacterial soap in the kitchen.

Bars for the bathroom basin and cloakroom but liquid soap in the kitchen and for the shower.

Bars can be difficult to handle when you are showering and it's far too easy to dop them, hence the shower gel.

Apart from hand-gel if someone has a really bad bug, we don't use anti-bacterial anything. Unless we have limited exposure, we're in danger of developing intolerance. That's my theory, anyway :-D

Hubby uses simple soap in the shower as well the handbasin

His skin doesn't like scented soaps and gels .

We have a water softener so the soap lathers well and doesn't leave a scum

I like soap bars, but they do leave more of a film on the surface of the basin etc which catches any dust - liquid. soap takes much less cleaning up!

Have to be very careful with liquid soaps as they may be antibacterial. I start itching straight away, followed by a rash and then a few days later the skin peels off, not nice. Use soap most of the time.

Last time in hospital they put me in theatre smock that was coated in an antibacterial agent even though they knew of my allergy. Somehow they forgot about the smock. I was covered in a rash from neck to thighs. Boy did I itch. :-S

I never use bars of soap any more.
I love not having the scum from the soap to clean up.

No matter what soap dish I used, I found myself having to clean the dish every day - and housework isn't one of my favourite pastimes!!

The average teenager remains convinced that a toxic fug sprayed from a canister will somehow win the war against the sweaty stink emanating from their arm pits.

In the fight against sweat, they see underarm deodorant as their very own chemical weapon of mass destruction.

I'm ok with a hand gel/soap that kills bacteria when trying to avoid a cold, but never use anything other than a pure bar of soap in the shower.

These products are rammed full of chemicals.

Florence61

Florence61 Report 19 Mar 2015 08:05

Does anyone still prefer to use a bar of soap rather than shower/hand gels?

I find that the liquid soaps do not lather as well as a good old fashioned bar and also the scents from the bar always made you smell fresh and clean. The shower gel scent seems to fade away quite quickly and I think many actually smell very similar.

What do prefer, thoughts please?

Off to work now, back later
