Have you got large dustsheets/old curtains? If you were to lay the sticks on that, then flip the sheet over them (from the open boot end) to make an envelope. You ought to be able to tie the corners to the backseat seatbelts or to lash them round the front seats.

That ought to stop the poles sliding out!

I've never liked the idea of sticking things through the sun-roof in case they snap in the wind.

I miss sun roofs.

All sorts of long things came home in my escort with the sun roof open.

If it is poking out the back with a flag on it will have to be me driving. He would be afraid of being arrested or something.

It is not that easy lash stuff in lengthways and Duncton Hill is a bit steep. At that price you don't want the buggers sliding out!

Seriously or Rhetorically?

Send OH out in his car – lay the front seat back as far as it goes, load the Bean Poles in, securely lash down and Bobs your uncle. Remember to tell him to attach a ‘flag’ to the protruding sticks and to tie down the boot. OH has transported a scaffolding board in that way, with one end almost against the windscreen

A freecycler collected a double mattress from us this morning, in a 3 door hatchback. They managed to squeeze it in width ways then tied the boot down so the 4ft ish amount of overhang didn’t fall out.

Find someone with a larger estate car?

For ages now I have been trying to find proper bean sticks.

Fred used to go off across the fields to somewhere he wouldn't let on about and cut his own bean and pea sticks.

The RSPB sell pea sticks at £3 a bundle and we usually get some every couple of years. They will just about fit in the back of OH's Clio.

Yesterday we went out and found a farm shop several miles away selling bean sticks. They are a tenner a bundle as are their pea sticks but I would like to have a bundle because they will last a few years.

Now,you can picture bean sticks can't you? You can picture OH's Clio estate ( the blue one!) and you can picture my Smart.

Go on then, tell me how.
