Well that's a coincidence Joy! :-D :-D :-D

Raby Castle is the private home of Lord Barnard...

... and of course ANEURIN BARNARD played RICHARD III in The White Queen :-D

Oh! ...and he's Welsh ;-) :-D

I have often been to Raby Castle
I think its one of the only castles left
that you drive the horse drawn carriages
into the great hall and out the other side

Lord Barnard is still living there
He walked through the Great hall when I was there one time

Yes there is a theory about Margaret Beaufort, but if she was instrumental in the Princes death, then surely her son Henry V11 would have been aware of it which doesn't explain why he was so paranoid about Perkin Warbeck, as he would have known that he couldn't have been Richard of Shrewsbury (Duke of York). Mind you Perkin was very plausible, so perhaps Henry feared a popular uprising in his favour regardless of what he really knew. Who knows? It's all fascinating!

wouldn't it be interesting if Perkins body could be located
and DNA tests done :-D :-D

magpie

magpie Report 28 Mar 2015 14:00

Yes that WOULD be interesting!! Perkin would only have to have been familiar with about six years of English court life which probably wasn't that difficult as young Richard 'died' when he was 10, and he couldn't have been expected to remember anything substantial before the age of 4. Edward spent most of his time at Ludlow, and Richard most of his in London, so the two boys didn't know each other that well. There is a thought that their mother substituted another boy for Richard, in which case the real Prince would have been spirited away!! Fanciful probably, but who knows?!! Maybe this thought was in Henry V11 th's mind when Perkin appeared.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 28 Mar 2015 14:35

and Josephine Tey did the Perkin Warbeck story too ... Brat Farrar :-D

magpie Report 28 Mar 2015 17:00

I've read Josehine Tey, but I'm not convinced, not at all ! I think it inconceivable that Richard was completely unaware of the Prince's fate. He was ruthless in his dealings with Earl Rivers and Lord Hastings, both Edward Vth's supporters and powerful enough to block Richard's path to the throne. They were removed with indecent haste, pre planned?!!

JoyBoroAngel Report 28 Mar 2015 17:45

It was a cruel world then
people did what they had to do to survive even a King :-( :-(

Yes, medieval England was a pretty scary place!

Graham

Graham Report 28 Mar 2015 23:53

There's a pub in Taunton called the Perkin Warbeck. That's a pretty scary place now. :-)

magpie Report 29 Mar 2015 07:31

Why now in particular?!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 29 Mar 2015 09:23

I think Graham was making a joke :-D

England was a pretty scary place in medieval days ... the pub is a pretty scary place now

btw, I wasn't referring again to The Daughter of Time in my last post

Josephine Tey also wrote a very famous novel whose plot is based on the Perkin Warbeck story although the circumstances of the story are different ... title of the novel is Brat Farrar
