Stepney Jewish School

I went to Stepney Jewish School until 1954. I wonder if there are any others on Genes Reunited who went there. I did not particularly enjoy going to the school. Kate Rose was the Head Mistress, and an absolute dragon. I think most of us were scared stiff of her. If you were caught talking in class, you got a ruler across your knuckles, or made to stand outside the classroom until your legs ached. There were however, some nicer teachers at the school ie Art Teacher Mr Baker and one or two other lady teachers who were nicer, but can't remember their names. The school dinners were horrendous and tasteless, plus were had almost the same menu every day. The one I wasn't keen on was "bubble and squeak", and it did not have the nicest of aromas. I must say, I enjoyed my secondary school which was like a walk in the park compared with Stepney Jewish School. I wonder if there are others out there who remember the school.

When I was at school there was just one teacher who used to use the cane. He retired due to ill health after suffering a stroke. All the kids sent him letters and cards. He was the most popular teacher at that school.

School dinners were always pretty bad in most schools, I think.
