This is the site to order certificates in England and Wales. They cost £9.25 inc world wide P&P

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

When you complete the form, only use the details from the GRO index. If you add anything extra and it's slightly wrong, it wont be issued.

Make sure to buy the cert from govt General Records Office (GRO). The cost is £ 9.50. There are lots of sites offering to do the job for you for anything from £ 20-50 !!!

The FreeBMD archive is far from perfect even for years they claim to be complete. The version which is part of Ancestry is better esp after 1900. Registration of BMD before abt 1860 was far from universal especially for births and some deeeply rural areas such as Somerset and Norfolk.

There is a possibility that online GRO certs up about 1920 may become available at a much lower price but don't hold yr breath. Several firms ( the usual suspects) have been approached to run such a scheme on contract.

Most of the time by cross referencing the BMD index, census records and sometimes electoral lists (Ancestry) it is fairly easy to generate a tree without actual certs. Some people are a bit obsessive though and insist on a cert for everything - expensive !!!

Never assume the data in other people's trees is correct without getting at least one and better two pieces of corroborative evidence.

You will do better to post in genealogy or "Find Ancestors" rather than here which is for chat about sealing wax and such.

Good luck

Welcome to the board Robert, what you are looking at is the index, you can only see the full details of a cert by buying it, which you can do online from the GRO.

However there are some Parish records of marriage certs and baptisms online on various sites where you can see the details, for instance Ancestry has the images of London marriages for a certain period, worth asking on FA board if what you are looking for is available. :-)

Welcome to the boards Robert. What you see on here are the indices to the records. You can use the information on them to order certificates from the General Register Office.
