Wilkin & Son's threatened to pull out of Tiptree if they didn't get planning permission to build a new £15 to £25 million jam factory plus 250ish houses built on the old site, needless to say Wilkin and Son's got plans approved...eventually.

Their jam is lovely but I didn't buy any.

Having kept a pet forager for all those years, I probably have more than they do.

Used to go there for jam when we lived in Eassex late 60s/70s but never ate there.

A rellie used to own Lyons Hall Farm which did (and does) supply a lot of fruit for Tiptree. They had me working most of the summer of '63 picking blackcurrants and such for coppers. I got a good sun tan but I have never been able to face blackcurrent jam again.

Tiptree jams are v good value I like the "Little Scarlett".

I get to see my Essex rellies from time to time but somehow we always end up in places such as the Ferryboat or the Blue Boar never once a tea shop lol.

I meant to put this a couple of weeks ago but I forgot.

We had a little outing recently where we went to the jam factory at Tiptree. The idea was that we would have an afternoon tea in the tea rooms there but, naturally, he decided he needed hot food when we arrived. He bloody well would!

Anyway, what I wanted to be known is just how efficiently that tea room is run.

You do have to queue for a table and that usually puts me off but there was quite a long row of people and it only took a couple of minutes to be seated.

The food was excellent and when I asked about the cheese before ordering, a little piece was brought to sample.

The very worst that happened was, when I asked for some butter for my bread, a waitress searched the table for the bowl of butter pats that was supposed to be on there.

If anybody ho lives in that area fancies meeting for an afternoon tea some time I am certainly up for it.
