can someone please tell me if I can view certificates online or do I have to buy them? Thank you

For the most part you do have to buy them but if you have London ancestors for example you can find marriage certs and baptisms for a certain period on Ancestry.

You can order certs online at the GRO for £9.25.

No you can't view them online .


You can buy copies from www.gro.gov.uk. Costs £9.25 with the GRO. ref

For birth certs under 50 years old you have to know all the info on parents etc. because of identity fraud

I certainly wouldn't like people looking up online my family s birth certs

Ancestry does have online parish copies of London marriages up to 1921 which is nice because it's the actual writing and signatures

They also have older parish records of baptisms

Online BMD refs only go to c 2005/2006

I have found some deaths on Ancestry for 2012

The post 2006 deaths have probably come from newspaper obituaries or church magazines.
GRO have said that they aren't going to microfilm and release the index after that year, although a hard (paper) copy can be consulted at various locations around the country
