Pug. Never knew it as a term for potters clay. We used to have pugfights on the bombsites in southeast London. It was our term for London Clay.

A small ball of it (smaller than a golfball) was stuck onto the end of a small stick and flipped in the direction of the opposing 'team'. In autumn, the sticks were usually from the pollarded plane trees.
