She was the archaeologist most closely associated with the recovery of the Mary Rose from the sea-bed and I was always a bit in awe of her.

I remember being in a roadside cafe when she came in for egg and chips.

It was quite like seeing a pop star for me.

She was one of my heroes too.

Sorry to hear this. Bumped into her in the Co-op in Newark about 1987. I was helping a friend that day as I very rarely went there.

Friend was trying to get people to buy things. I was stood next to her when Margaret Rule came past. When my friend started to talk to her I realised I'd seen her somewhere. She joked she was into old things not new, then I knew who she was. She was with 2 others and they went off. She seemed in a rush so didn't speak to her. Told my friend who she was but she wasn't interested.

Son was furious he hadn't had the chance to meet her, he was really interested in the Mary Rose.

RIP Margaret, you bought history alive to so many.

sorry to hear this.

Phyll ............... you're being sexist :-)

if actresses can now generally be called actors, both sexes can be called heroes :-D

I think the use of the word to describe a female hero has declined as the use of the word to describe the drug has become so much more commonplace.
