I found the death of one of my (many) relatives who died in WW1.

Next to his name is " MCG "

Does anyone know what that means?

I've googled, but all I get is info about Melbourne Cricket Ground!

Shirley,

That's where I found his date of death.

There's a website showing many of the young men from Midlothian who died........ more information on that website than CWG.

Thanks for the suggestion MBSG, I'll do that now.

That's him. I knew he was a 2nd Lt, and in the 28th Battalion of the Machine Gunner Corps.

The name is McKinlAy.

It began as Kinlay, Kenlay or Kinly.... I've traced back to my 8xgreat-grandfather c1658 in Tranent East Lothian. My 3xgreat-grandfather b1817 in Tranent added the Mc

I know how to spell it, as it's my maiden name.

Family members who went to the USA and England changed the spelling to McKinley; all my relatives (that I know of) in Scotland spell it with an A.

From "The Long Long Trail" best resource for ww1.

Bordon "camp" nr Alton was a large permanent army barracks with men's families living there with them. It has only recently been sold off by the MoD.

Rollo ~ thanks for that.

First glimpse of 1st link.......... MGC !! Machine Gun Corps !

Not MCG as I found on the Midlothian page, which was probably a typo.

Problem solved.

Thankyou everyone for your help, very much appreciated.

There's an Officers file for him at the National Archives - not online, though. You'd have to go there or get someone to go for you.
