What do you think?

Have they got a bit tired or are they still the place to get your veg?

Around here they are a total rip off - I just priced up one and it was FIVE times what I could pay in the supermarket for exactly the same fresh produce.

There was another selling sweets and cakes and they were all pretty low end stuff at premium prices.

Think they are a rip off for people who shop by bus in town and can't get to a supermarket easily. :-(

we talking indoor or outdoor? Cardiff's indoor market is brilliant

It depends on the area, and the type of market.
I love the indoor market in Oxford. Some things are over priced, some things are a bargain, and they have some very unusual things there.

We have a local market in Winchester from Wednesday to Saturday, and a Farmers Market on a Sunday.
One veg stall on the Wed - Sat market is a rip-off.
However, one stall - only there on a Wednesday and Saturday, I make a bee-line for, he sells venison and wild boar. Not only does he sell the meat - he actually shoots it :-D
I can ask what type of deer the (eg) liver came from, (I find red deer liver too strong) and when it was shot.

I've started shopping for fruit and veg in our local outdoor market over the last year or so because it's not only cheaper but often fresher and more flavoursome than the supermarkets

well i suppose it does vary from city to city, ours is a new indoor/outdoor market so unpopular
that it is being pullled down to make way for a new cinema don't know why as we already have one..

Before they destroyed our ancient and thriving market to make way for yet another shopping mall our city was always busy and thriving.... now the old market and shops have gone it is dead with loads of empty shops. :-(

We had a look around our local weekly market today, for the first time in a year.

The fruit and veg seemed good value. A lot of the other stalls appeared to sell Tat.

That is the problem Stella - too many have been destroyed to make way for other shops or other buildings (both indoor and outdoor markets) so they cannot compete.

I find the produce I buy from both supermarkets and smaller shops to be far superior anyway - most market stalls seem to sell absolute rubbish these days in all the towns I have visited or lived in (and many of the stallholders leave a bit to be desired too, I might add).

maggiewinchester - now that sounds like my sort of market - one where good produce is sold at good prices rather than absolute rubbish.

I have also noticed a rise in the number selling sweets, junk food etc - they are living in the past and have not realised that all they are doing is exacerbating the problems with obesity in children etc. Maybe they do not have the intelligence to realise, but I wish we had the old market stalls where the goods were wholesome and at decent prices rather than pushing cheap rubbish at over-inflated prices on us.

The veg stalls today were selling 2 large caulis for £1.50 (£1 each in Sains) and a net of onions, red or white, for £1. Sains were charging 70p per kilo. There was probably 5 kg per net.
If OH could have been persuaded to carry them, I'd have bought a net!

Last weekend I bought a fortnight worth of veg for less than a pound - all fresh

yes our outdoor market is just like a small carboot sale and the indoor market just does not sell anything i could ever imagine wanting..that is very small too although it is a very tall building.

Having said that the city centre is always empty i have to add that there are less and less parking spaces, and i need my car.

we seem to have an over-abundance of e-cigarette , mobile phone and second hand cd stalls, foreign food stalls and tattoo parlours.

Stella - spot on - plus charity shops and mobility scooter emporiums.
