Chris in Sussex Report 19 Apr 2015 17:18

My 'corner' shop is a Waitrose with the usual off road cars (that only ever go off road when visiting Waitrose) in the car park.
We also have an Aldi with top of the range Land Rovers in the car park!
The largest store is a Sainsburys on the edge of town where you can guarantee your car will be damaged by the women who cannot drive their people carriers. Mine has been damaged more than three times in Sainsburys but not in the other two!

Perhaps those house prices should take into account the likely cost of car body work repairs, minus £1000+ so far :-(

I can understand that, Tawny. Try out Waitrose and Marks on the spur of the moment and buy the replaceable bags - then end up at the most economic - until the bags need changing :-D :-D

I don't drive, and my local store is a Sainsbury's. When I go out with my friend, in his car, we usually end up in the big Tesco superstore - and I have my Sainsbury's eco-bags.

All on one stretch of road in a very nice part of the south of the city we have a decent sized Tesco metro, a Waitrose and a Marks and Spencer simply food. The people are all seen going into the Tesco with Waitrose and Marks shopping bags.

We have a Lidl surrounded by some very nice detached and semis plus a Waitrose in an area where I lock the car doors

Chris, my daughter occasionally takes me to Harestock.
We park in Aldi, get the basics there, then walk over to Waitrose for the 'nicer' things (like Marmite Flatbreads) :-D :-D

We have had a Waitrose near here since the 70's and it's a bit old and tired now. They've recently built a new Aldi opposite. You pay in the Waitrose car park, but the smart Aldi one is free and Aldi is the busiest store. I don't think the house prices round here have been affected.

They same the same about having a house near a good school don't they?

We rarely go to Dartford, so can't really make an informed comment about the condition of Waitrose when it was open.
We'd rather have free, unlimited parking at a different chain! :-D

Oh and in reply to you original query, I think that the Waitrose would still be beneficial, but just not the 30 - 38,000 quoted in the press.

The Waitrose in Dartford was not an asset. My sis in law told me it was dark, dirty and not a pleasant place to shop.

I have both an Aldi and Lidl near me in Plumstead, I do love watching tbe 4x4 owners shopping in both and using their Waitrose bags so no one knows where they actually shop!

in Cardiff there is a Waitrose and an Aldi in close proximity to each other

Dartford had a Waitrose. It closed last year.
Aldi are currently refitting the space and will open in a few months.

House prices in Dartford and it's catchment area are rising, but thats more the ripple effect of London house prices rather then Waitrose v Aldi.

I'm more inclined to think that the chains look at the demographics to help decide where to open a store. In this instance, Waitrose assumed more people would travel from the wealthier income areas than actually did. Their value range isn't too different from Sains, Tesco etc, but can't match Aldi/Lydl (sp)

It has been reported lately that if one has a home close to a Waitrose store then your home will be valued at possibly over £30,000 market value. Waitrose is an asset.

However, should an Aldi store be close to you - then the value is much lower than market rates.

What happens I wonder when a Waitrose store is opened and a few years later Aldi erects one right next door - does one value cancel the other out?

This is not a daft question - this has actually happened. Waitrose and Aldi are built next to one another. Shoppers go in and out of Aldi carrying Waitrose bags.
