UzziAndHerDogs Report 20 Apr 2015 19:36

I know I normally ignore politics :-0

I have a legal right to vote in the forth coming election, as long as I register before the 7th May.

The question is ?? Do I have a moral right to vote as I have lived in Spain for 10+ years.
Part of me says yes ...
I still care about the country that I was born in, I am still proud to be British. I will still get my pension (when I am allowed, I am not that old :-0 ) from the UK
I still have family there

Part of me says no ....
I haven´t lived there for so long, I am not reliant at the moment on what happens in the election.

Vote or Not ?

Hi Uzzi sweetie,
I think you have to ask your self the question if you voted, would you benefit if the party you voted for got in or would it make a difference to you if they lost.

better now :-D

Mary I agree if the UK comes out of the EU it would´t be great for us. but I have an OH who has worked in Spain for the last 8 years so we are also in their system , which is why I didn´t over worry.
I really need to take a lot more notice of things :-0

You have nothing to lose by voting.

GlasgowLass Report 20 Apr 2015 21:09

Well done Uzzi,
I was watching The One Show tonight.
They were discussing the deadline and that anyone living abroad can still register to vote for 15 years after leaving the UK

UzziAndHerDogs Report 20 Apr 2015 21:20

Ann I have nothing to lose and maybe nothing to gain. I am a great believer in saying if you don´t vote don´t complain.

I understand that my 1 vote won´t make a difference but I know that if everybody who agreed with this didn´t vote then it would be nightmare, and I as they actually have ideas

I once voted for the Monster Raving loony party because my vote counted.

I once went to a local council election vote and it was a tied vote, after two recounts it was still tied.

They drew names out of a box to decide the result

So your one vote does matter

'Vote early & vote often' was the universal cry in which part of the UK not so long ago?

lollybasher Report 21 Apr 2015 17:41

Glad you registered Uzzi, the unions fought hard for the right of the working classes to vote. You do have the moral right to vote in your mother country, plenty here from the Eurozone get an automatic right to vote, so why not you,

;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

Robert Report 21 Apr 2015 17:47

As a Scotsman living in England, I was not allowed to take part in the Scottish Independence vote.

Having said that , I think everyone in the UK should have been involved in that vote not just people living in Scotland.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 21 Apr 2015 17:57

If you're entitled to vote, then you should do so, but is it morally right?

Mine will be an unpopular opinion - if someone has lived full time outside of the UK for 6+ years and for intents and purposes sees another country as their home, why should they be entitled to influence the running of their country of birth?

Some people split their time between the UK and another country - I've no problem in those cases.

Robert, I couldn't disagree more about the English voting on independence for Scotland. If the English votes had swung it for the independence vote, and a couple of years down the line it all went pear-shaped up there,, who would the Jocks blame? Us of course. This is not an anti Scots sentiment, by the way, I had a couple of pleasant hours in the pub last night with my Scottish friend.
