Dear Mr Magoo and LaGooner

Hello

I have been smiling ever since I read this story.

These property developers have knocked down so many places of historical and interesting value, all in the name of building luxury apartments.

I think this is a fantastic decision to rebuild the pub.

Take gentle care
With best wishes
Elizabeth, EOS

I hope the builders were given a HUGE fine :-P

The pub was about to be Grade II Listed!!!
This was a blatant and calculated disregard of planning regulations.

I hope the Israeli-based 'developers' are sued for not giving the staff adequate notice as well.
They can rebuild it, but it won't be the same.

They hadn't even taken the pictures off the walls!

I wonder if they had emptied the beer cellar???

Well done the council!

AnnCardiff Report 30 Apr 2015 17:23

at the moment, a Cardiff pub "The Vulcan" is being rebuilt in the St Fagan's Welsh History Museum in Cardiff - it was in a redevelopment area and was taken down brick by brick to be rebuilt - don't know how far they've got with it at the moment - there are dozens of buildings of all different types which have received this treatment

There is a remote chance this developer could get away with this. It has gone to review.

I really hope he does have to rebuild far too many lovely building like this in London are being lost on a daily basis. They are developing the heart out of our city.

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Apr 2015 18:28

AnnC ...............

What you describe is quite common, but I doubt any have been demolished by a bulldozer and THEN the developers ordered to re-build!

which is the case here!

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 30 Apr 2015 18:43

I fully understand that - of course I do - just flying the flag for Wales

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Apr 2015 21:08

you could also fly the flag fro Canada, and most other countries who decide to save old buildings.

In this case, I think you have a development company owned "off-shore" ........ and possibly unused to being controlled by having to obey town council decisions.

I gather their application for development of that site had been turned down ......... but they just went ahead in secrecy

we find here that development companies owned by companies from a certain off-shore country often do not believe that they should be controlled. Often, even individual citizens from that country do not believe in controls

We don't like that tree?? We'll have it cut down, bring in the arborist .............. even if it is a city-owned tree on city property, or on a neighbour's property.

I want to develop this site? OK, we'll just do it. WHAT??? You're suing me??? We'll fight it through the courts

and this is not the same country as mentioned in the article that Mr Magoo cited.

Dame*Shelly*("\(*o*)/") Report 30 Apr 2015 21:34

yer but if the developers are ordered to re-build

its will not be the same as i would look at it as a new build

new brick new windows new doors new every think

nope defiantly would not be the same

the only good thing is it would cost the developers a lot
of money to try and put every think back to how it was

old historic feel defiantly gone

:-( :-( :-(

Do we actually have the craftsmen to be able to rebuild this pub?

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 30 Apr 2015 23:38

AnnCardiff, there's a museum in Sussex - The Weald and Downland, that takes down threatened historical buildings and rebuilds them as they were originally built (ie minus 'Crittal' windows)
This building didn't even get that chance :-|

Agree Shelley, it will never be the same :-(

Claire, we do have the craftsmen - at a price! :-D

There's those who do rebuilds in St Fagan's and the Weald and Downland, and the craftsmen who rebuilt Uppark after it was burnt down. :-D

Mind you, it will be quite costly replacing the bricks/stones that were broken by the bulldozer. Aww, pity the businessman - NOT! :-P
