Thank you all who have been on the thread, We will see our friend tomorrow and find out how he is.

I know the Gurkhas are held in great respect. I know £millions have been collected in UK already. I just feel so helpless. As an ex service family we came across the Ghurkhas, always friendly and smiling. They asked for very little but gave so much.

For anyone who was in the forces reading this, I still make sure my laces are done correctly. :-D

Thank you for caring about the people of Nepal and our friend, :-) <3

Liz
I'm sure that whatever you give will be a most welcome help.

2 Gurkhas in their smart green blazers were standing by collecting buckets in a local supermarket. I asked them about an article in the local paper requesting tents, sleeping bags etc. and they said that many had been donated and they were most grateful, but money would now be most helpful.
Many shoppers were donating, as these soldiers are highly regarded locally and we feel for them, their families and their country after this devastation.

How awful for that poor family, my heart goes out to them and all those affected by this tragedy. I wish I could do more than just donate what little I can afford.

Pat
I'm sorry to hear of your friend's sad loss.

Many Nepalese live in my local area, as we have a Gurkha regiment stationed nearby.
I know one particular family and always speak to the Mum, as she drops her children at school. I hardly dared to ask after their relatives back home on Monday, but thankfully they are OK.
We don't have many Nepalese families where I help at school, but nearer the barracks there are many.
Earlier this week they and local community held a vigil of solidarity and remembrance.
So hard when they are so far away

An absolute tragedy.
I feel so very sorry for the family and friends of all who have been affected by the earthquake in Nepal.
I just hope now that people will be generous in their giving.

One report I've read said that over 5,000 were killed with an estimated one million left homeless.

World-wide acts of solidarity now urgently needed.

What should we do without the Gurkhas?

They have done so much for us. This is by no means the way we should like it but it is our chance to thank them.

Oh Pat, it is so sad and brings it home when you know somebody actually involved. They must be devastated of course, and all we can do is raise money. I believe the rapid Relief team from the camp up the road is helping, not sure if theya re actually going to Nepal or sending aid in other ways. They usually attend earthquakes and other disasters.

A house down the road from me is holding a cake sail on Monday, in aid of those in Nepal.
I shall be there. There are quite a few Nepalese people in Winchester.

Our local club has a Gurkha chef. He has become a friend. His son is a Gurkha who is stationed out here.

On Tuesday we went to the club and asked our friend if his family and friends were safe - he couldn't reach anyone in Nepal on the phone so didn't know.

Last night we were up the club again. OH saw our friend as he left work. His father and brother have been killed and his house destroyed. We feel so helpless.

Please help if you can. It really brings home the tragedy when you know someone involved.:-(
