Why not try the grovelling coverage by the Russian press of Pres. Putin for a change then you could find out what true grovelling is ?

Funnily enough I don't watch Russian TV, Rollo.

And I'm not Russian so their behaviour doesn't embarrass me at all.

I love the names, Charlotte is the female verion of Charles and Diana lives on in her little granddaughter William is making sure that she is never forgotten.

If you want to say that the UK press have a grovelling attitude towards the head of state and their extended family then you should be aware of attitudes in other states. That you are apparently unaware of press grovelling in, say, Russia, North Korea, Turkey, Egypt, Argentina, Venezuela, Cuba, Hungary to name but a few suggests very little effort into researching the term "grovelling press" or a complete ignorance of the wider world.

Republican France and upmarket USA are full of "grovelling" towards Kate, William and their children with exactly the same impact on the fashion market as in the UK.

As it is most of the UK population have a favourable attitude towards the head of state and her immediate family going as far as love for many. Even in Australia the republicans were unable to dislodge the House of Windsor.

At this time of the media being fall of tendentious statements and impossible undertakings of all stripes the birth of the baby princess reminds us that there are normal people in the UK.

Long may she reign over us.

Rollo you talk a lot of sense & I love reading your post .but just need to brew up & then I can sit & read um :-D :-) ~~~~~~~~island ;-)

I usually enjoy RolloTheRed's contributions simply because he puts up alternative views & opinions that I would not have thought of or, more likely, they highlight my own ignorance of the topic under discussion.

A few threads would be boringly poor & mundane without his input. I like reading threads consisting of diverse interpretations & conflicting opinions.

Rollo, I really don't need a lecture on the press from you. Your attempt to patronise is irritating and lacking in manners.

I'm well-educated, well-read, socially aware and politically aware. I am also a republican.

I wrote about the situation and the grovelling in this country in these particular circumstances. If I'd wanted to widen the context to the rest of the world I would have done so.

We need the royal family as they are the mainstay of our Country .I still believe Maybe not in my Life time. it will be condensed down & be a more Modern .Prince William will be there as a loyal member to Honour & carry on and receive . The love & respect people have for His grandmother The Queen :-)

I worked for years for one of the world's largest media companies. They were (and are) extremely sensitive to what their readers and viewers wanted to read and see - getting it wrong costs serious money.

Thus in democratic countries you only get grovelling that sells, that people are happy about ( except for republicans of course ).

Last Sunday the DailyMail had a supplement of 20 pages of grovelling which sold out. (no, I didn't read it)

The only major UK newspaper which has much of a line in grovelling for the republicans is owned by a Russian oligarch, Alexander Lebedev. He also owns the Evening Standard.

The grovelling press in the other countries I mentioned don't have to worry about their financial stability.

I guess that in the UK republicanism is in some ways to akin to creationism in that it defies logic and the popular will. It can never answer the key question i.e.

Assuming you are not in favour of out and out anarchy ( Mad Max, the Stand etc ) but prefer an elected head of state just who would that be ? That is the question which sank republicanism in Australia where politicians are somewhat more venal than anything on offer in England, a veritable pit of vipers.

How would the UK get on with, say, David Cameron as P.M. and Nicola Sturgeon as executive president ?

Historically the House of Commons tends top cut up very nasty to any opposition ( off with his head ) and is way unlikely to accept an elected competitor ( which is why the idea of an elected upper house gets nowhere ).

So the British prefer to muddle along with their unelected head of state which has lots of upside, costs buttons and has near zero downside. We can all revile our politicians and yet remain united. Breaking something which so obviously works is daft.

Of course I am not against republicanism per se. In my other country, France, the idea of any restoration of the Bourbons makes the skin crawl and I sing la Marseillaise as lustily as everyone else.

Still not needing or wanting a lecture.

Scottish coverage of the birth: Sunday Mail relegated the news to page 13. Scotland on Sunday carried the story on page three. The Sunday Herald said, on page two: "A baby was born yesterday, under normal circumstances to a woman, and Britain,- or at least a large par of it- went a little mad with people lining the streets and press and broadcasters seeming to forget there's an election". Roll on the next independence referendum! Let's hope they get it right this time. I am now off to the pub to have a drink with my Scottish friend.

Well of they go to Anmer Hall .They will be settling in with George & Charlotte .probably wont see them again till the christening .what are the press going to do now .make stories up ? never , ;-)
