No I suppose the death dates are a little far apart to be classed as coincidence but they both died young as many grinders did.

I often think that coincidences are what we want to make of them. They didn't exactly die on the same date or even the same year - it is often very easy to muddy our thoughts in genealogy.

Just another little coincidence John died 1845 James 1844

Gwyn John (who am I am looking) for died around 1845 no second marriages.

:-D :-D@Sue, trust me there was a lot of them from different branches of the family.

Did either men have another later marriage?
Hopefully at least a father would be recorded.

That was how I managed to track back one of my folk, born very early 1800s.

Margee,

UzziAndHerDogs Report 14 May 2015 17:54

Sue the Staniforths were a large family in that area.

Margee I had remembered the age thing on 1841 and I think John was b 1789 or even 1787 !

MargaretM Report 14 May 2015 17:46

But, Sue, if those names came from the 1841 remember they could have been born 1787-1791.

" Especially as Hackenthorpe had the Staniforth Sickle and Sythe works."

That sounds sooooo stereotypically Northern!!! :-D

I can hear Victoria Wood saying it in one of her sketches.....

MargaretM Report 14 May 2015 17:24

Remember that ages on the 1841 census are rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0. Evidently both John and James' ages were entered as 50 so they could have been 50-54 meaning that they could easily be brothers.

UzziAndHerDogs

UzziAndHerDogs Report 14 May 2015 17:19

Margee my mistake I should have put 1791 !

Maggie I had thought cousins possibly but most of the Staniforths were sickle makers so it would have been strange for cousins also. Especially as Hackenthorpe had the Staniforth Sickle and Sythe works.

MargaretM Report 14 May 2015 17:13

I don't understand how people born 1891 are on the 1841 census?

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 14 May 2015 17:03

Could be brothers or cousins - if you're going to get married, and family are going to lose a day's pay - may as well have 2 of the family marrying on the same day! :-D

I have a few cases where family/friends joined together and had ALL their children - ranging from a few months to late teens baptised on the same day. In some cases, that was a good proportion of the village :-S

I have a John Staniforth b c 1791 in Hackenthorpe in 1841 he was a sickle grinder living at Hackenthorpe and he married 27th June 1814. As I can´t find his parents I was scooting around the 1841 census as you do and 2 doors away from him is James Staniforth bc1791 a sickle grinder ..now as most the Staniforths were sicklle makers I thought I would look into James, he also married on 27th June 1814.

Could they be brothers or just a coincidence.

Not that it would help me much as I can´t find who James parents are either. ! I do know who is cousin is tho´ :-D :-D :-D

Edited to change the birth dates to 1791 or there about :-D
