Apparently they weren't getting enough custom!!
I personally don't believe that excuse, people used to stay there when they walked the South Downs Way.

Thanks for that. Pity it is no longer a YH. I stayed there in 1960 when a friend and I cycled from Enfield. We were away four nights, no way of letting parents know we were OK, and both 14 years old. I remember we went from there to Portsmouth, but can't remember the other two stops. Happy days.

The Black Bottle is owned by David, who also owns the Black Boy pub, the Black Rat restaurant, and, the alternative to the Youth Hostel - the Black Hole.

I live about 10 minutes up the road from the Black Hole :-D
