I've looked for recipes on the internet, most of them I wouldn't make.

I then searched for cookbooks.............especially Australian Women's Weekly ones.

I've now got an enormous hardback book....... a compilation of a few AWW slow-cooker recipe books. Ordered it on Tuesday, it arrived on Friday. That's good service!

Anyone want some slow-cooked beef cheeks?

:-D

That was the best stew ever! So tender.

I thought there would be enough for two meals, but DH went back for seconds.

Bonus...... the ceramic insert is SO easy to clean :-D

I'm going to look through my recipe books for casseroles and do some fiddling.

I find that most savoury recipes that are 'stew' like, and say 'cook in a casserole in the oven for ever', can usually be cooked in the slow cooker :-D
Today, I am attempting ox cheeks (never had them before), that I've soaked overnight in wine (cheapo stuff) with garlic.

I think on low I usually cook beef stew 10 hours, but like Mari Celeste I either part boil potaoes first or cook separately as they don't seem to cook well in that time.

8 hours isn't enough :-(

Hopefully 10 hours will be enough........ I want to eat at 7pm!!

:-D

First experiment is on :-D

The instruction book isn't very helpful.

Doing a beef stew....... tossed the meat in flour & browned it with a couple of onions. It's in the cooker (warmed up for 20 minutes) with stock & some herbs.

8 or 10 hours on low?

Couldn't be without my slowcooker, most used "gadget" in the kitchen.

Mine's about 30 years old, just a big metal pan that can go on the hob (if needed) and then onto it's hotplate thing. Makes a wonderful pot roast, bit of beef (preferably brisket), some carrots, swede, parsnips etc in beef stock and perhaps a bay leaf and some peppercorns. Put it on and forget about it for the rest of the day, when ready lift the beef out and thicken the stock to taste. Yum.

Mind, I personally haven't had any success with potatoes in it so cook those separately.

I have 3 slow cookers. One large one and one medium and one has 3 small pots all joined together. I belong to a group on Facebook called Slow Cooker Saddo's. Its a brilliant group and they cook your sunday breakfast overnight ,cakes made with coke and lots more. A brilliant site as they show you the creation from start to finish and even the ones that go wrong

I have a Remoska. We originally bought it for use in our trailer tent but use it at home mostly for jacket spuds. Also does chops and chicken joints rather well, and as it is only the size of a saucepan it uses less electricity than the oven.

Pulled Beef sounds lovely Polly, I might try that
I use my slow cooker quite often, especially for stews and meals that require a long cooking time

I bung everything in, turn it on and go out for the day

GL. We had pulled beef at my sons on Saturday. I asked how long it would take in e slow cooker because it takes a long time cooked conventionally. I would love to give it a try. :-D

We use our slow cooker a few times a week. I did the pork in it today while we were out and it was lovely. I do beef joints in it, casseroles. I never heat it up before, just put everything in and switch it on. I love mine.

I've had a few over the years.first one 1978 and loved it for things like braised steak ,stews.even poached pears in red wine...all sorts of things.

Ideal to leave on low all day...never heated anything up on the hob...have seared steaks first.

Wonderful for home made soups with loads of veg and pulses.

Great to know you can walk away and a meal is cooking. Use ours in winter. My daughter uses it a lot in winter. She starts it off, goes to work and comes back to a hot meal straight away on a cold day. House smells wonderful, very homely return after work. :-)
