There is a birth in Birmingham in 1942 for a Jeffrey A Bates
(there were only 3 born 1942-1944 anywhere in England/Wales)

There are far more Geoffrey Bates in the same period, with a Geoffrey C Bates born Birmingham 1944.

Of course, unless you know differently, he could have been born anywhere.

Can you remember the names of his parents? If we can find records for their deaths, we could back-track to find their probable marriage and his birth. He may have been the informant on their DC.

https://www.freeelectoralroll.co.uk/ is a database of ER entries. As there is no indication if they are current, cross reference with the post code on 192.com. Basic results are free.
Remember that we have been able to opt out of the commercial ER listing since 2002.

as you say - quite a few around that date - and as few marriages to fit the bill as well

David - take a look on the free Mormon site - www.familysearh.org - very easy to use

Only one person on this site has a Jefferey Bates in their family tree; and he was born in 1956. If he was on this site himself, I would have thought he would have at least appeared in his own tree.

DetEcTive,he is definitely a Jeffrey not Geoffrey,Jeffrey A Bates certainly sounds a possibility, though I never met his parents.Someone else who is looking into this mentioned Jeffrey A Bates and said he thought he married a Janet Stansbie.
AnnCardiff,I will have a look on the Mormon site, thankyou, and thankyou for your information Graham.

Lost me post!

Janet M is listed on freeelectoralroll roll for 2002-03 , but no sign of Jeffrey.
You could write to her in case she has opted out, or possibly try to find the children on Facebook.

Ann,Misty and DetecTive, thankyou so much for this information,it all sounds quite possible.Only trouble is I'm not very good at finding the info. How can I write to her if I don't know where she lives? How do I find out the names of the two possible children?Sorry to be such a dumb dumb. :-S

To find the children’s names, go to http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Select Births
Surname Bates
Mother Surname Stansbie
Date range 1971-1974

Only 2 results.

Janet M Bates, Jeffrey A Bates and one of their children show on the ER for 2002 in Birmingham. The link to the Freeelectoralroll isn’t working for me at the moment. If it’s the same with you, either use credits to view the entry on GR or pay-to-view on 192.com.
