They are being very tough on badgers.

50 years ago you could find stickleback, gudgeon, dragonfly, tadpoles, water beetles, pond skaters and lots of others in any English pond. Now most of the ponds have gone and those that remain have poor ecology thanks to run off from main roads and farmers fields.

Little bits of the wetland survive and it has even been increased here and there even in Sussex and Kent as well as the Fens. If you are very lucky early on a summer's morning you might hear the boom of a bittern across the Fens. Bitterns love sticklebacks.

I rarely tune into the annual Spring Watch TV show but, then again, I don't to much ironing either.

Yesterday evening, I found myself doing both... at the same time!

Did anyone else see Spineless Simon?
A sorry state for a male stickleback but, I'm hooked!
I'm really rooting for that wee guy now
