There was a pub in Waltham Abbey called the New Inn, (sadly no longer), who's pub sign showed a picture of a gnu.

Andy - I drive past that one regularly and used to stop off there for a pint and a bite to eat - or at least I did until it was knocked down.

In the 17th century, a servant from the (royalist) hall nearby was found hiding by Cromwell's soldiers and was beheaded before being thrown into the local river, which is where the pub gets its name from.

It became a Mexican restaurant but was sadly demolished by developers last year

A favourite of mine, which I visit regularly, is the Who'd Have Thought It in Cornwall.

Been past this pub a few times.......weere plans to demolish it at one time.

If PETA want to sanitise pub names, do they want all the 'Hare and Hounds' renamed?
I don't like hunting, but realise that hare coursing, like bear baiting and cock fighting was once a common occurrence.

There's a village named Blackboys in Sussex.

Our 'Black Boy' pub was definitely there in the 1840's, same basic building (it's extended since David has had it). as was the' Dog & Duck' (directly opposite, now a green area with trees), and what is now the Black Rat restaurant was 'The Kings Arms' pub.
If they were named after Charles II's mother's nickname for him, why should they be renamed?
'The Kings Arms' closed for a while, and re- opened as 'The Queens', which labelled itself as a 'gay' pub.
Obviously, they hadn't noticed that anyone/everyone went into the 'Black Boy' without being labelled!!
'The Queens' wasn't open for long, and David bought it.

He did and "Nigger" WAS removed from some versions of the film, BUT it WAS re-instated later

Black Boy pubs are usually named after Charles II. That was the nickname his mother used for him on account of his dark skin and eyes.

He did! ....and it used to be the name of a colour.

My local is called the Black Boy. When the current owner bought it, (about 25 years ago)there was pressure on him to change the name.
As he explained, it referred to the coal covered boys/men who used to emerge from barges on the canal nearby, and he kept it. The sign is a silhouette of a boy's head, so you, the viewer can decide.....

He then got a small black dog, he named Rats.
When the pub up the road became vacant, he opened it as a restaurant, and named it the Black Rat.
Then he bought a disused shop in town, opened it up as a wine bar, called the Black Bottle.
He's recently developed a derelict building next to his pub, and opened it as a B&B, called the Black Hole. You may notice a theme here.

There was a pub called The Black Boy not far from us, the PC mob had the sign changed from a small black lad to a chimney sweep.. Perhaps all pubs named for kings or queens should be re-named The Monarch's Head, to appease feminists. Any more suggestions? Try to keep it light-hearted please.
