A 502 error is caused when a web page hands off to another server and does not get a reply. Usually it means that a unit of a server farm is temporarily offline and the admin. is not bothered about the site being offline for a short while i.e. low budget.

Genes or at least their tech people will be able to see the 502 error in the log. Doubt if usual CS have a clue about it.
