Andysmum seems to have given me the answer.
Nevertheless I would have thought the GR software could enable automatic generation of a unique identifier for each person on the tree, in application of the SOSA numbering system, for example.

Or do you mean the numbers in purple stars at the corner of each entry? These simply indicate the total number of tree and record matches for that person.

What numbering system? There doesn't appear to be one.

Do you mean where a relative has been duplicated for some reason? That might show a (2) after the name.
Assuming the number is in the name field, you ought to be able to edit it to suit.

Could somebody please confirm which numbering system is used on the family trees ? Can it be altered ?
