I love offal - two favorites are lamb's liver and kidneys eg steak 'n kidney pie, devilled kidneys (which I sometimes have for breakfast), kidneys in red wine... sweetbreads, brains fromages de tete ... then there are such delights as smoked pig's ears, pigs trotters.

I get most of our meat at ind. butchers but have nothing against a good offer from the supermarkets. My sen. cat used to like Felix Marinades which have been withdrawn. It took ages and £££ in experiments before I found he likes Waitrose OwnBrand in gravy + I had to persuade a mgr to carry a stock. Hence being in Waitrose on a Sunday morning wondering what to do about lunch. Too busy to shop during the week.

As a young man I qualified as a butcher following 500 years of farming and butcher ancestors it was always a useful second string especially at uni. which I financed for myself no grant or loans.

Hearts, woof woof.

donkey snout?

:-S

Is that half of the donkey face, or just the nose? How many donkey noses in a Kg?

You may not like offal Rollo, but to imply that anyone who eats it is eating dog food is rather crass - even with a 'smiley'.

I personally don't like supermarket beef - nomatter what supermarket it comes from. Much rather have a good venison or bison joint.

In your effort at food snobbery (no doubt French food is best, as you point out how many French cheeses you had) are you aware that there are restaurants in France that specialise in tripe, chicken liver and donkey snout - and, of course, horse.
All considered as dog food in this country :-D

I've kept my old 70's slow cooker just for cooking liver and onions - the modern day ones are not quite as "slow" :-D

You can definitely cook liver in the slow cooker - I don't eat liver but my mum cooks it regularly and always in the slow cooker.

Ages since I had heart, must lok out for it, never thought of doing it in the slow cooker, love kidney too, and liver. Wonder if you can cook liver in the slow cooker?

I went 'big' shopping yesterday, spent today cooking some of my bargains, and will be freezing most of it when it's cooled down.
I bought a pack of 3 lamb hearts for £1.99, which, as they come from NZ, have to be cooked before being frozen again, and heart 3 days on the trot is a bit much. They are in the large slow cooker with a variety of vegetables.
I also bought an ox kidney, reduced to 60p - use by date tomorrow. That's in the small slow cooker. I should get at least 5 meals from the hearts and kidney :-D
I say at least 5, as I also add barley and lentils to them, to bulk them out - and the meals are very filling.

I've also got 6 belly pork slices, 3 of which are now frozen, and a smallish pork roasting joint (£4) that I will cut in two and freeze :-D

I like cooking whole meals and freezing them, it means when I get back from work, I just heat them in a microwave and eat (as long as I remember to take them out in the morning). Much cheaper and healthier than bought instant meals, it also means I only have one bowl to wash up :-D
