the very epitome of an English gentleman - or was he Irish?

no, not Irish then

Macnee, who was the son of a racehorse trainer, grew up in Berkshire and was educated at Summerfields Preparatory School, where he acted in Henry V opposite a young Sir Christopher Lee.

He went on to Eton College, before training at London's Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

In France the series was a massive hit titled as "chapeau melon bottes cuir" (bowler hat and leather boots). I think the sartorial element in France was as important as the highly improbable plots. Steed was the quintessential English gentlemen in French minds even if Tony Hancock was closer to the mark.

Macnee /Steed has left an immortal highly entertaining series of entertainment and some very innovative filming. He not only acted with aplomb but was very much part of the production team.

Luckily most of the early monochrome series was made on film and has been remastered to DVD boxset - a revelation after VHS!

My OH was very disappointed when she dug out my bowler hat. I failed miserably on all other points.

RIP

They showed the opening to the original series on our local TV news and the anchor called it the "best ever" opening to any TV series

...of 'The Avengers' has died aged 93.

I loved the show back in the '60's, the original B&W episodes, thought it was great fun.

RIP
