Mmm! Could be. That was dad's side.

Mum's side were from Pompey and mostly either in the R Marines or worked in the dockyard. Well, I was attached to the dockyard myself as well and worked in there one and a half days a week.!

The victualling yard must have generated a need for butchers.

Just a thought.

Actually in this case it was the butchers' trade . Gt grandmother's family and Great Grandfather were both butchers. The Gt gt grandfather (William Riggs) who came from Dorset was actually a gamekeeper according to census. Don't know where though.

I was thinking the sea trade might well have been a way for them to have met.

This is just one of the interesting background layers to family history.

Thanks Sharron. The Dorset lot did eventually (Gt grandfather) end up in Pompey (via the Isle of Wight) but that was because My Gt grandmother came from Bishops Waltham/Botley area. :-D And William Riggs died in Swaythling area (Southampton). they did move around a lot looking for work. And Elizabeth Gt grandfather Henry (Harry) Riggs was a butcher.

Ann, and maybe Elizabeth as well, I know you have Turktown connections. One of my family married a Chimsen and, later, a Vining both, I think, came from Dorset.

They were clay pipe makers in London but our family had strong ties to Pompey.

The clay came into Pompey for pipe making through the port of Porchester which would be how he and she were in a position to meet, I would think.

Just a thought, that this would be the way that a Pompey, Dorset might be made.

Thanks Elizabeth, no not come across any transcribed as Doming. My Gt, Gt Grandmother was Elizabeth Dominey she was born in 1813 in Morden Dorset, Her parents were George born c1790 a thatcher and Sarah nee Cox. Elizabeth married my Gt Gt Grandfather William Riggs c1835. Elizabeth died after they moved to Eling in Hampshire in 1865 aged 53. Mary Dominey, her sister born 1828 Morden lived with William and Elizabeth from when they were married and in the 1851 Mary had a 2 year old living there as well. A very complex relationship I think as after Elizabeth died Mary married William. No proof but pretty sure the young Mary born c1850 was their child.

However, not Cerne Abbas so probably no connection. Fascinating hobby isn't it?

|Mine mostly seem to come from round Cerne Abbas - before 1839 they are very difficult to disentangle, there are so many with similar names (and are butchers). My closer ancestors had moved to Weymouth. My grandfather Leonard Charles Dominy was born in Weymouth as I was. I have a much fuller (public) tree on Ancestry if you should want to follow any names up! And I expect you have found the irritating fact that they have often been transcribed as Doming!
